Episode 96 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features Grays Harbor College Women's Wrestling Head Coach Andy Cook. Cook was named head coach of the Grays Harbor College women's wrestling program in 2016. In the program's inaugural season, Cook guided the Lady Chokers to an 18th place finish in the WCWA and its first individual All-American, Kacie Moorehouse. He continues to be heavily involved with USA Wrestling. Cook was a U.S. coach for the Junior Pan American Championships and Cadet World Championships in 2017. He is widely regarded as one of the top women's wrestling coaches in the nation. Episode 94 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features Olympic and World silver medalist Brandon Paulson. Paulson is among the elite Greco-Roman athletes in U.S. history. He scored silver medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, and the 2001 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. He qualified for three additional U.S. World Team's throughout his Senior-level career. As a Division I wrestler for the University of Minnesota, Paulson earned NCAA All-America status as a senior in 1998 by finishing in seventh place nationally at 118 pounds. Paulson now coaches alongside fellow Minnesota great Jared Lawrence at the PINnacle Wrestling School in Shoreview, Minnesota. He was a member of the 2008 Olympic coaching staff in Beijing, China. Paulson also coaches with the Minnesota Storm and Minnesota/USA Wrestling staff throughout the year. Lewis won the 70 kg gold medal in men's freestyle wrestling at the U23 World Championships held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, November 21-26. He was one of three medalists at the event for the United States. Lewis is competing in his final season for Rutgers at 165 pounds. He was a NCAA qualifier for the Scarlet Knights in 2016. Prior to attending Rutgers, Lewis was a two-time NJCAA All-American for Iowa Central Community College. Episode 91 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points features U23 World bronze medalist Ty Walz. Walz won the 97 kg bronze medal in men's freestyle wrestling at the U23 World Championships held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, November 21-16. He was one of three medalists at the event for the United States. Walz was a three-time NCAA All-American and ACC champion for Virginia Tech. He finished his collegiate career with 109 wins, the 10th most in program history. Episode 89 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features 2017 Junior World champion Kamal Bey. Bey blitzed the 74 kg/163 lbs. field with one spectacular throw after another to claim America’s first Greco-Roman gold medal at the Junior Worlds since Garrett Lowney did so in 1999. He rattled off a tournament high 61 total points throughout his five matches in Tampere, Finland. He followed up his Junior World title by earning a berth on the U.S. U23 World Team that will comepte in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Nov. 21-26. Bey has been on quite a run this season, picking up Senior-level gold medals at the Bill Farrell International and Dave Schultz Memorial International, on top of a bronze medal at the Grand Prix of Zagreb. He also secured gold at the Austria Open in the Junior division. Domestically, he finished as runner-up at the U.S. World Team Trials and was the U.S. Senior Nationals champion. He was a six-time All-American at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals held in Fargo, N.D., qualifying for the finals on five occasions, and winning the Junior Greco-Roman crown in 2015. Bey was an Illinois high school state champion for powerhouse program Oak Park-River Forest prior to making the move out the to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. to focus strictly on Greco-Roman. Episode 88 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features the U.S. men's freestyle national coaching staff Bill Zadick, Joe Russell and Kevin Jackson. Zadick just completed his first full year as the head coach of the men's freestyle program. He was instrumental in leading the U.S. to its third World title in men's freestyle. Zadick was a World champion in 2006 and a NCAA champion for Iowa in 1996. Russell joined USA Wrestling as the Manager of Freestyle Programs in May. He was a longtime assistant coach at the University of Minnesota before taking over as head coach at George Mason University for six seasons. Jackson returned to USA Wrestling in June as the National Freestyle Developmental Coach. He served as the U.S. National Freestyle Coach from 2000 to 2008 before taking the head coaching position at Iowa State University. Jackson was an Olympic champion in 1992 and a two-time World champion. Episode 87 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features 2017 Junior World champion Maya Nelson. Nelson topped the 63 kg/139 lbs. weight class in women's freestyle at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland. She won four matches, including a 6-0 shutout of Bulgaria's Yuliana Yaneva in the gold-medal match, to claim the title. Nelson is now a two-time Junior World medalist. She picked up a bronze in 2016 to go along with her recent gold. Episode 86 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features Olympic champion and four-time World champion Jordan Burroughs. Burroughs picked up his fourth World title out in Paris, France in August. He won five hard-fought bouts to claim the 74 kg/163 lbs. men's freestyle gold medal. In the championship match, Burroughs topped past World champion Khetik Tsabolov of Russia, 9-6. In addition to his individual triumph at the 2017 World Championships, Burroughs' performance was instrumental in the U.S. claiming its third team title at the event, the first since 1995. Burroughs has competed at the Olympic Games on two separate occasions for the U.S. He won the gold medal at the London Games in 2012 and finished in ninth place last year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Burroughs is a four-time World champion, earning the top spot in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. He also tacked on a bronze medal at the 2014 World Championships. Episode 85 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features 2017 Junior World champion Daton Fix. Fix topped the 55 kg/121 lbs. men's freestyle charts at the Junior World Championships held in Tampere, Finland, in August. He won five matches on his way to gold, scoring five technical falls and outscoring his opponents by a combined 53-1 tally. The win in Finland added to an already outstanding resume for Fix that includes a Junior World bronze medal, a Cadet World Bronze medal, a Youth Olympic Games silver medal and two Cadet Pan American titles. He has competed in four World Championship events for the U.S., two in the Cadet division and two in the Junior division. Fix was a four-time Oklahoma high school state champion for Charles Page High School, ending his career with a perfect 168-0 record. He was awarded the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017. The talented youngster will begin his collegiate career this year for the tradition-rich Oklahoma State program. He expects to compete at 125 pounds for the Cowboys. Episode 84 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features two-time World champion and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder. Snyder just capped off his second World Championships appearance with a gold medal at 97 kg after winning a legendary finals showdown against fellow Olympic champion Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia, 6-5. Snyder's win put the exclamation point on the U.S. winning its third men's freestyle team World title in history. With his performance in Paris, France, Snyder became the eighth American to win multiple World gold medals in men’s freestyle. He joins John Smith, Jordan Burroughs, Lee Kemp, Bruce Baumgartner, Mark Schultz, Kevin Jackson and Terry Brands with this distinction. Including results from the Olympic Games, only Snyder, Smith and Burroughs have won three World-level gold medals in a row. It has been a historic three-year run for the new face of American wrestling. In 2015, Snyder became the youngest American to win a World championship at the age of 19. He set another age record by winning the Rio Olympics at 20. Now he has cemented himself as one of the best pound-for-pound wrestlers in the World by grabbing his third gold. Snyder has one year of college eligibility remaining for Ohio State. He will return to Columbus, Ohio as a senior with two NCAA championships and three finals appearances under his belt. Episode 80 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features two-time Olympian and current University of Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy. McCoy is entering his 10th season as the head coach at Maryland. During his tenure, Maryland has accumulated four top-20 NCAA finishes, three ACC conference championships and seven individual All-Americans combining for 11 such honors. His coaching career includes time at Penn State, Lehigh and Stanford before taking over at Maryland. He is a three-time ACC Coach of the Year recipient. As a competitor, McCoy made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2000 and 2004. He earned a silver medal at the 2003 World Championships and was a member of four U.S. World Team's. He competed collegiately for Penn State where he was a two-time NCAA champion, three-time All-American and Hodge Trophy winner in 1997. Episode 78 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features U.S. National Women's Coach Erin Vandiver. Vandiver recently accepted the position as the new girls wrestling coach at national high school powerhouse Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School in Kingston, Pa. The Pennsylvania native returns to her home state to lead a brand new accelerated elite girls developmental program, which seeks to attract many of the nation’s top high school girl wrestlers to pursue national and international goals while attending a highly respected academic institution. Vandiver has a proven record of success as an athlete on the high school and international levels, as well as extensive experience coaching age-group wrestlers. One of her key responsibilities for USA Wrestling has been working with the nation’s top Cadet and Junior level women wrestlers, including coaching U.S. age group World Teams. In her role as a coach for the resident-athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Vandiver has also helped numerous U.S. Senior women wrestlers win World and Olympic medals for the United States. She has been a member of the women’s coaching staff at the last two Olympic Games. Competing under her maiden name Erin Tomeo, she was a member of the 2001 and 2006 U.S. World Teams. She won the 2008 U.S. Open and was a four-time U.S. Open runner-up. Erin wrestled at Lock Haven University as a member of the varsity men’s team for the 2001-2002 season. Competing for Grove City High School, she was the first girl in Pennsylvania wrestling history to place at Districts and win a match at the Regional high school boys wrestling tournament. She was also active with USA Wrestling in its age-group women’s programs, and won Cadet World bronze medals in 1998 and 1999. Episode 76 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features two-time NCAA champion Dean Heil of Oklahoma State University. Heil won his second NCAA championship at 141 pounds this season after posting a perfect 32-0 record. He won the 142nd individual NCAA title in Cowboy history and became the 39th wrestler in program history to win multiple titles. The U.S. gunslinger opened his World title run with a quick 10-0 technical fall over 2015 World bronze medalist Vasyl Shuptar of Ukraine. In the quarterfinals, he topped eventual bronze medalist Akhmed Chakaev of Russia, 13-11, scoring the deciding takedown with five seconds left in the match. Moments later, Stieber secured the match-clinching takedown on Asian silver medalist Behnam Ehsanpoor of Iran with one second remaining in the bout to pull out a 9-8 victory and qualify for the finals. Standing across Stieber in the gold-medal match was 2015 European Games silver medalist Beka Lomtadze of Georgia. Leading 1-0 entering the second frame, Stieber rode his high-powered offense to a comfortable 8-4 decision and his first World championship. Stieber won his fourth NCAA title and the Hodge Trophy for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2015, becoming just the fourth wrestler in NCAA history to accomplish this feat. He is now the first four-time NCAA champion to win a World Championships. Episode 56 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features Olympic champion and three-time World champion in men's freestyle wrestling Jordan Burroughs. Already cemented as one of the greatest wrestlers in U.S. history entering the 2016 season, Burroughs found himself with a rare opportunity to compete at the Olympic Games for the second time after winning the U.S. Olympic Team Trials last April. Burroughs was one of the premier faces for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as he attempted to grasp his second Olympic gold medal. On August 19, 2016 Burroughs competed in the Olympics as a heavy favorite in the men's freestyle 74 kg division. A day he invisioned as his grand statement to the world turned out to be his most difficult day on the wrestling mat. Burroughs was defeated in the Olympic quarterfinals by eventual silver medalist Aniuar Geduev of Russia, 3-2. He later fell in the repechage round to Bekzod Abdurakhmonov of Uzbekistan, 10-0 and left Rio without a medal. Despite his Olympic setback, Burroughs has ammased four total World medals, three gold and one bronze, on top of an Olympic gold from 2012. He owns an astounding Senior-level record of 130 wins to only four losses since his debut in 2011. How does Burroughs view his most recent Olympic outing? Episode 55 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features two-time Cadet World champion in men's freestyle wrestling Gable Steveson. Steveson won men’s freestyle gold for the U.S. at the 2016 Cadet World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia at 100 kg/220 lbs. He picked up four wins on his run to gold, including a 5-1 decision over Adam Beterbiev of Russia in the gold-medal match. With the win in Tbilisi, Steveson became just the second U.S. wrestler to win the Cadet World Championships twice. The other occured on the very same day with Yianni Diakomihalis also going back-to-back. In addition to his two Cadet World wins, Steveson has ammased two Minnesota high school state titles for Apple Valley HS entering his Junior year. Episode 54 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features 2016 Cadet World champion in men's freestyle wrestling Kurt McHenry. McHenry won men’s freestyle gold for the U.S. at the 2016 Cadet World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia with an electrifying performance at 42 kg/92.5 lbs. The Virginia native won four matches over the top Cadet wrestlers in the World to win his first World title. Two of McHenry’s four wins came by technical fall. He posted a last second victory over Mahir Mammadzada of Azerbaijan in the championship match. McHenry will be a high school sophomore this year at St. Paul's in Maryland. The 19-year-old Hall won men’s freestyle gold for the U.S. at the 2016 Junior World Championships in Macon, France with a remarkable performance at 74 kg/163 lbs. Hall won five matches over the top Junior wrestlers in the World to win his first Junior crown. Two of Hall’s five wins came by technical fall with one other coming by pin. Episode 50 of Bonus Points features 2016 U.S. Cadet World Team member in men's freestyle and USA Wrestling Triple Crown winner Travis Wittlake Jr. Wittlake won the UWW Cadet Nationals in Akron, Ohio this June to secure his place on the Cadet World Team that will compete at the Cadet World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia in September. Wrestling out of Oregon, Wittlake won the folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman national titles at the Cadet level this year to earn his fifth Triple Crown award. He won the Cadet folkstyle and Greco-Roman nationals last year, as well as finishing in third place in Cadet freestyle. Entering his Junior year at Marshfield High School this fall, Wittlake has won two Oregon high school state championships. Episode 49 of Bonus Points features Ben Askren, 2008 Olympian in men's freestye wrestling and two-time NCAA champion. Askren competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China for Team USA. He was a two-time NCAA champion and four-time NCAA finalist for the University of Missouri. After competing at the Olympics, Askren made the transition to mma full-time. Episode 48 of Bonus Points features former wrestler and UFC Hall of Famer Frank Trigg. Trigg is a wrestling and mixed martial arts veteteran on top of several other career endeavors that include acting, stunt work and color commentary. He currently covers mma in several journalistic capacities and is now working in Hawaii as a stunt man for television drama Hawaii Five-O. Trigg grew up wrestling with mild success in Upstate New York. He posted college stints at Oklahoma State and Phoenix College before finishing his career as a NCAA qualifier for Oklahoma. He was highly competitive on the Senior level through 2000 before transitioning to mma full-time. On the mma scene, Trigg held championship titles for several different promotions. He fought in the famed Pride Fighting Championships and the UFC where he fought for the Welterweight crown twice against all-time great Matt Hughes. Episode 41 of Bonus Points features two-time U.S. Olympian and two-time World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev. Dlagnev won the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials held in Iowa City, Iowa on April 9 at 125 kg/275 lbs. in men's freestyle wrestling. He secured his Olympic berth with wins over top-flight U.S. heavyweights Connor Medbery, Dom Bradley and Zach Rey. In the best-of-three championship seried Dlagnev topped Rey two matches to zero. After moving to the U.S. from Bulgaria at age four, Dlagnev has paved a remarkable road on the wrestling mat. He has competed at four senior-level World Championships on top of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. Moreover, he wrestled for a medal in all five of his World and Olympic competitions, earning bronze in 2009 and 2014. Last year, Dlagnev won the U.S. World Team Trials but was forced to remove himself from the World Championships due to injury. He still battles the very same injury to this day. At the University level, Dlagnev was a four-time NCAA Division II All-American and two-time NCAA champion at Nebraska-Kearney. He helped lead the program to its first NCAA team championship in 2008. The same year he won a gold medal at the World University Championships in freestyle. The 48 kg weight class was not qualified for the U.S. to compete at the Olympic Games at the time of Augello's victory in Iowa City. In order to qualify for the Olympic Games Augello needed to place in the top two at the 1st World Olympic Games Qualifier held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on April 23. She posted a 3-1 record in Mongolia to finish in second place and accomplish her qualifying goal. Augello is currently a two-time WCWA national champion for King University with two years of eligibilty remaining. She was a 2011 Cadet World champion and a two-time Junior World Team member. Episode 38 of Bonus Points features Daniel Dennis, 2016 U.S. Olympic Team member in men's freestyle wrestling at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. Dennis captured gold at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa on April 10. In the best-of-three championships series Dennis defeated two-time U.S. World Team member and former college teammate Tony Ramos in two matches by scores of 2-1 and 10-0. After taking multiple years away from the sport, Dennis returned in 2015 and made an immediate impact. In 2015 he placed fourth at the U.S. Open, second at the U.S. World Team Trials and first at the Grand Prix of Spain while competing at 61 kg. Since dropping down to 57 kg for the Olympic year, Dennis placed third at the Bill Farrell International and won the U.S. Open prior to his title run at the Olympic Trials. Dennis was a two-time NCAA All-American for the University of Iowa. He finished as the NCAA runner-up in 2010 at 133 pounds. Episode 37 of Bonus Points features Frank Molinaro, 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion in men's freestyle at 65 kg/143 lbs. Molinaro navigated a gauntlet of talented contenders to capture the Olympic Trials gold in Iowa City, Iowa on April 9. He defeated two-time NCAA champion Kellen Russell, four-time U.S. World Team member Brent Metcalf, four-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber and two-time Junior World medalist Aaron Pico on his road to gold. In the best-of-three championships series Molinaro defeated Pico two matches to one. Molinaro now turns his attention to qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games by placing in the top three at the first World Olympic Games qualifying tournament in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on April 24. If necessary, the final World Olympic Games qualifying tournament will be held in Istanbul, Turkey two weeks later with the top two wrestlers in each weight class qualifying for the Rio Olympics. The past two seasons Molinaro has won three gold medals at international competitions. In 2015 he claimed gold at the Guelph Open and Grand Prix of Spain. This February he ran the table at the Pan American Championships to take top prize. Molinaro was four-time NCAA All-American for Penn State University. He won the NCAA championships in 2011 and was NCAA runner-up in 2011. Episode 35 of Bonus Points features Myles Martin of Ohio State University, 2016 NCAA Division I wrestling champion at 174 pounds. Martin became just the 15th true freshman to ever win a NCAA individual championship when he defeated top-ranked Bo Nickal of Penn State 11-9 in the NCAA finals held on the big stage at Madison Square Garden in New York City, N.Y. on March 19, 2016.On his road to the title as the No. 11 seed, Martin defeated Nicholas Wanzek (Minnesota) 12-4, No. 6 Bryce Hammond (CSU Bakersfield) 5-3, Matt Reed (Oklahoma) 2-0, Lelund Weatherspoon (Iowa State) 8-2 and No. 1 Bo Nickal (Penn State) 11-9.Martin was pulled from redshirt in January of this year to compete for the Buckeyes. Growing up in Monroeville, Ohio, Stieber won four Ohio state championships, posting a 184-1 overall prep record. As a junior in high school, Stieber placed third at the U.S. Senior Nationals.Stieber attended college at Ohio State University where he won four NCAA titles, four Big Ten titles and the 2015 Dan Hodge trophy. He helped guide the Buckeyes to a Big Ten and NCAA title in 2015, the first NCAA team championship in school history.Now focused soley on competing at the Senior level in freestyle wrestling, Stieber has proven to be a force at 65 kg. This season he has won silver medals at the Bill Farrell International, Golden Grand Prix Finals, U.S. Senior Nationals and Outstanding Ukrainian Memorial. Episode 32 of Bonus Points features avid wrestling fan, past NCAA All-American, Greco-Roman standout, UFC veteran and current mixed martial arts analyst Chael Sonnen. Sonnen attended the University of Oregon where he was a NCAA Division I All-American in 1998. On the Senior level, he went on to win a silver medal at the University World Championships in 2000, on top of two gold medals at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in 2000 and 2001 in Greco-Roman wrestling. A long-time MMA veteran, Sonnen reached the pinnacle of his fighting career when he faced all-time MMA great Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight title at UFC 117 in 2010. Sonnen was moments away from winning the belt before being submitted with less than two minutes left in the final round, falling just short of the title UFC champion.Sonnen has since made a name for himself as a MMA analyst working for companies such as ESPN and Fox Sports. Episode 30 of Bonus Points features one of the best men's freestyle wrestlers in USA Wrestling history, Olympic and World champion Kenny Monday. In total, Monday won four Olympic and World medals. He won a gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea and a silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Monday also won gold at the 1989 World Championships and earned silver at the 1991 World Championships. Monday was a member of three U.S. Olympic teams (1988, 1992 and 1996). He was also the first african-american wrestler to win the Olympics. Among his other career achievements are a gold medal at the 1988 Tblisi Tournament, considered by many to be the toughest tournament in the world. He was a three-time NCAA finalist for Oklahoma State University and a NCAA champion in 1984.
