Show notes

One thing I’ve learned over the last few years of doing this podcast is that every show has its own unique story to tell, and its own special contributions to the Pantheon of Ween. The July 28, 2001, Science Fair show at Bucks County River Country, was no exception. The concept for this show was audacious: small-time local band The Sound Scientists (Eli Ward and Ian Kelly) would put on a festival (complete with on-site camping), entirely on Eli’s credit card, with a promise to fundraise for the fire company, and oh yeah, Ween would headline. It turns out thousands were raised for the local fire department, and a raucous crowd got to enjoy a one-of-a-kind outdoor Ween show. This was the first show of the 2001 summer tour opener. The band hadn’t played since the Norva in Norfolk, VA, in April, and they were breaking in a new keyboardist, Jason Fuller, as Glenn was in the midst of a year-long hiatus that remains something of a mystery to us fans today. Fuller turned out to be temporary, and Glenn would return to the stage in early 2002, and all would be well that ended well. As it was, Fuller acquitted himself well. Some highlights of the show included a abbreviated a capella bullhorn “Poopship” by Gener during a power outage; the first ever live performance of “I’m in the Mood”, in anticipation of the upcoming God Ween Satan rerelease (cleverly dubbed the 20th anniversary edition only eleven years after the original release); an ethereal and rare “Flutes of the Chi”; a deep, melodic, and trance inducing “Don’t Sweat It”; and a baller LMLYP with special guest Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Michael Hampton of the Parliament Funkadelic on guitar trading licks with Deaner. Gritty and brown, the funk was in town, and brought the house down!
