GUEST INTRO
Steve McGarry is the founder and CEO of Sandstorm, a platform that connects brands with designers who help them enter the Metaverse.
I’ve chosen to talk to Steve because companies are spending billions of dollars on the Metaverse, even though as a still nascent industry, we’re still trying to figure out what it’s going to be like in the future, with companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) committing to spending billions each year alone on making their vision come to fruition.
Sandstorm’s marketplace is generating 7 figures a year, which shows that not only is their funny money willing to invest in the Metaverse, there is also hard cash being spent by brands, and that’s something worth discussing.
WHAT YOU LEARN
Why would Web 2.0 brands want to build for the Metaverse?
What do you think the Metaverse will actually look like, and how long will it take to get there?
Why does everyone make the assumption that assets will be instantly transferrable between Metaverse worlds?
What are the roadblocks to making this actually happen, since every instance has a different design style, design filetypes, game engines, etc?
Blockchain interoperability would also be insane because each project has to create interoperability with every other Blockchain?
Even if the designer creates the asset to exist in different file formats and on different Metaverse worlds, that doesn’t mean the developers of every Metaverse world will accept those asset design submissions, and how would the Metaverse know that an asset is already owned by a user, and how would they deal with enabling the use of that asset?
What is the argument for a Metaverse that doesn’t need Blockchain/crypto/NFTs?
Wouldn’t it make sense to build something better than a Blockchain that would power the Metaverse?
