It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It: Family Farm Succession Planning
It is a question that seems to be the frequent elephant in the room among many farming families: "What does the future of the farm look like and how do I fit into that picture?"While the topic of farm transition sounds overwhelming,  complicated, and downright scary, having a succession plan can help farm businesses smoothly transition ownership and/or responsibilities in a way that keeps the agriculture industry - and the families that operate it - viable.Morgan caught up with Dick Wittman, from Wittman Consulting, and Rachel Henley, with Virginia Cooperative Extension, to talk through the tactical - and practical - ways to start this conversation. As Dick says: "You can't delegate what you don't define." In this episode, he explains how personality assessments (like DISC) and defining the board of directors helps a family understand how to best work with each other to make decisions.  He provides examples of what NOT to do as you initiate these discussions and answers the *somewhat* controversial question: "Should in-laws be included in these family meetings?" Rachel shares with us how Virginia agricultural organizations are rallying around producers to provide the resources they need to feel empowered and educated as they plan for the future.Give yourself some peace of mind and use this episode as a tool for your next family farm transition meeting!Resources:https://wittmanconsulting.com/https://www.farmtransition.org/https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/tags.resource.html/pubs_ext_vt_edu:farm-transition-planningShare your thoughts on our social media at vafbyoungfarmers or email us at vayoungfarmerspodcast@gmail.com

Family Helping Families (Part 1): Chris Earl, CK6 Consulting
Picture this: it's mid-morning in Southwest Virginia. The light fog is rising. The October foliage is starting to transition to red and orange. It's sale day at Point Pleasant Angus, and the cattle are calling back and forth to each other as they stand on display. This was the backdrop for this episode and it set the tone for this two-part episode with CK6 Consulting. In this first segment, we get to know Chris Earl. Fueled by his faith and love for family, Chris and his wife, Krista, started CK6 Consulting in 2008 to provide a marketing resource for those in the beef business, based on his decades of experience in the industry. However, consulting was never about a dollar transaction for Chris, as evident as he describes his approach as a mentorship relationship with his clients. While this episode covers exciting trends in the seedstock sector, marketing tips, and common mistakes to avoid, Chris encourages young producers to dig deep to find their "why" and to never walk alone on their journey through agriculture. As an added bonus, his mama's advice is some of the best we've heard yet!We hope you love this episode as much as we loved recording it!Share your thoughts on our social media at vafbyoungfarmers or email us at vayoungfarmerspodcast@gmail.com
