Ostaritutkimuksia - Shopping Mall Investigations is an artistic research project by Salla Valle and Miina Pohjolainen, exploring the history and future of shopping centres in Helsinki. We meet in Konala, a northern suburb of Helsinki, where they have turned an old dentist clinic in a 1960s shopping arcade into a temporary art space. We talk about the sociocultural significance of shopping centres in the history of Finnish urbanisation, how these spaces are remnants of a lost suburban dream, and that their upcoming demolition shows how city planning values and capitalist strategies are changing. Miina and Salla show me the group exhibition they have curated, and we talk about our collaborative film screening (de)construction. They also tell me about the local relationships they have formed, with the neighbouring bar and pizzeria, and local residents of the area, and how they have included these people and places in the project.
