On this UVA Speaks podcast, Rupa Valdez, Associate Professor with a dual appointment in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia, talks about her work in designing systems and technology to support how people manage health in their homes and community. Valdez takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how the physical, social environment, and characteristics of the individual shape the patient experience and therefore inform design solutions. She explains how her experience with a disability has shaped her interest in this work and focuses her research on marginalized communities.

Rupa Valdez is an Associate Professor who holds a dual appointment in Engineering Systems and Environment in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia. Her research and teaching focus on designing solutions to support how people manage health at home and in the community. She draws on methods from multiple disciplines, including human factors engineering, cultural anthropology, and health informatics.
