How do you start your day? If you’re like me, you like to start most days with a nice warm cup of joe. That’s another way to say a nice warm cup of coffee! In today’s lesson, we are learning five different expressions you can use when talking to a barista at a coffee shop. Are you ready to get caffeinated? Let’s go!
I’d like a black coffee with room.
我要一杯黑咖啡，不加太满。
Black coffee refers to filtered or drip coffee with nothing in it, so use this expression when you want plain filtered coffee with no milk or sugar. You can also add “with room” at the end to mean you want them to leave you some extra room in the cup. They will not fill the cup all the way up. If you say, “with room,” then the barista knows you are going to add some milk for yourself later.
I already placed an order online through the app.
我已经在App上下单了。
Use this expression to let the barista know you have already paid for your drink online. In some coffee shops especially after the pandemic, they may have a pick-up station where your coffee will be waiting for you. You don’t even have to talk to anyone! But if you do, you can use this expression to let the barista know that you don’t need to order because you’ve already done it online.
What kind of milk would you like?
你想要哪种牛奶？
If you have ordered coffee in the United States, you know that we have a lot of milk options! So, it's likely that the barista will ask you what kind of milk you would like if you order a drink. Typical options for milk are whole, skim, 2%, low-fat, almond, coconut, and oat milk. If you just want regular cow’s milk, then you can say, “I would like whole milk please.”
Can I use my own tumbler, please?
我可以用自己的杯子吗？
It’s important to remember to make sustainable and environmentally friendly decisions. If you have brought your own cup, you can use this expression to ask the barista if you can use it instead of a disposable cup! In this expression, a tumbler is specifically a cup that is insulated and good for traveling with hot liquids.
What’s the name for the order?
点单用的名字是什么？
To conclude your order, the barista may ask you this question. Especially when it is busy, they will ask you the name for the order so they can write it on the side of your cup. And when it is ready, they will just call your name. If they don’t have your name, then the barista will usually read out the order instead, like this, “Medium hot latte with whole milk!”
