Hello everyone! Welcome to Your English Update, a podcast by EZ Online English.

Grab a glass and take a swig because this week we are learning all about drinking idioms! We have five different idioms you can use while either drinking with others or describing different situations that may occur while drinking. We will also be providing a short conversation example for each expression so you can better understand how to use it. Okay, let’s go ahead and just jump into it!

This one’s on the house.

这杯免费。

This expression means a business is giving you an item for free. On the house means on the house’s tab or bill. They will be paying for your item for you. If a bartender says, “This is one’s on the house,” while they hand you a beer, this means the bartender is giving you the beer for free. If you’d like to buy your friend a drink, then you can say, “This one is on me.”

Oh, I didn’t order another drink.

Don’t worry! This one’s on the house.

Beer me!

给我啤酒。

This is a funny and informal way to ask your friend to give you a beer. It is an imperative sentence which means it is a command. It literally means give, get, or hand me a beer. You don’t really use it with any other alcohol–just beer. When you say it, you actually outstretch your hand towards your friend so you are ready to receive the drink.

Do you need another one?

Yeah, beer me!

I’ll drink to that!

我要为这干一杯。

When you are drinking and having a conversation with a friend, you can use this expression to say that you completely agree with whatever the other person has said. The expression comes from toasting. When someone is making a statement, you will cheer and drink because you approve of whatever they are saying. However, it is just not as formal as toasting. You would use it in conversation.

This place has the best beers on tap.

Yeah, I’ll drink to that!

Let’s take a quick break before we continue on with the last expressions. You can always read today’s transcript and translations over on ezonlineenglish.com. Okay, let’s get back to the expressions.

I’m cracking a cold one open with the boys!

我要和这些男孩子们喝杯冰啤酒。

“Cracking a cold one open with the boys,” is actually funny and joking way to say you are having a drink with your friends. The word cracking here is used to describe the sound of opening a can of beer. The expression most likely comes from marketing advertisements that show manly men opening beer with their other manly friends while watching sports. This kind of advertisement is used so often to describe male gatherings that “cracking a cold one open with the boys,” has become kind of an Internet meme now.

I’m going over to Cory’s later.

Oh, you’re going over to crack a cold one open with the boys?

He can drink me under the table.

他能把我喝趴下。

If someone can drink you under the table, this means that he can drink more than you without becoming drunk. The idiom most likely comes from the result of drinking until you’re unconscious and ending up under the table and on the floor. If he can drink you under the table, then he can out drink you. Another way to say this is that he holds his liquor well.

You shouldn’t drink with him…

Yeah, I heard he drank you under the table last time.

Okay it’s time for the review. Let’s see if you remember all of the idioms from today.
