According to the Bible, ancient Israelites used to transport the pieces of the Ten Commandments in a chest blessed by God. The chest safeguarded the Israelites, struck down their enemies, and helped lead them to the promised land. But after an invasion in 586 B.C.E., the fabled ark disappeared.
