Washington Irving was one of the first short story writers in American literature. His best known short stories are “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle. The story is set in a Dutch settlement in New York State shortly before the American revolution. The Dutch had first arrived in North America in 1609, sailing with the English explorer Henry Hudson.
