This week 2GTR host John Kane and special guest co-host Boston Rock Radio DJ Legend and major Rush fan Mike Hsu continue to deep dive into the background of one rocks most legendary bass players Billy Sheehan! Sheehan is known for his work with Talas, Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, Niacin, and The Winery Dogs. And his latest Sons of Apollo an progressive metal supergroup formed in 2017 and composed of drummer Mike Portnoy, bassist Billy Sheehan, keyboardist Derek Sherinian, vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, and guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. Sheehan has won the "Best Rock Bass Player" readers' poll from Guitar Player magazine five times for his "lead bass" playing style. Sheehan's repertoire includes the use of chording, two-handed tapping, right-hand "three-finger picking" technique and controlled feedback. Rush fans might have caught him on the Presto and Roll the Bones tours with Mr. Big. What an incredible show!! Nothing but the best here on 2GTR! Thank you Mike, Billy! When Neil finally retired from Rush in 2015, citing tendonitis and shoulder issues, he said “It does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to … take yourself out of the game,” he explained at the time. “I would rather set it aside than face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing It’” …Even so, we somehow knew we might never see him again. Yet not in this way. As dedicated fans, we mourn his loss. Collectively we feel for his close friends and family. It helps to talk about it. Have a listen with hosts Dan, John, and special guests/super fans/organizers Lance “The Shred” Kasten and Mike Rosenthal. Yet, with the groups rise in fame and broader audience appeal, they were no longer the biggest cult band everyone hated. Suddenly it became cool to love Rush. After over 40 years Rush released a total of 20 studio albums, 11 live albums as well as numerous compilation albums, of which 24 have gone gold, and 14 platinum. And it has only been a decade or so that they have become a household name. So why did it take Rush this long to become mainstream?
