Yuki Matsuda is the co-founder, designer and creative Director of the Meg Company - whose brands include Yuketen, Epperson Mountaineering, MonItaly and Chamula. Born and raised in Osaka, Japan Yuki's early taste was inspired by 1950s Americana. As a teenager Yuki was introduced to fashion by working at a popular local retail import only store in Osaka. His passion would only grow and it soon landed him in LA washing cars in the day and washing dishes at night. In 1985 he got his big break and got a job attending trade shows and discovering cool American fashion brands that he could big back to back to Japan.
Fast forward to 1989 and his then-girlfriend now wife, Megumi, invested in Yuki’s dream of owning his own clothing company. Which he then named after her. Her investment allowed him to buy that fax machine and kickstart the business in their shared apartment in the South Bay. Now Yuki is a successful entrepreneur and he shares some tools other creatives could use.
In this episode he takes us through his journey as young influencer in the Japanese vintage scene all the way to opening up his companies here in LA. He then takes us through his process of gathering the best materials from around the world to incorporate in unique and fulfilling American-made footwear.
