Today I look at Femicide and Gender-Based Violence; with femicide being the intentional killing of a female, a word with no antonym, a word that was first documented in 1801, and is now defined as, and I quote: “the murder of women by men motivated by hatred, contempt, pleasure, or a sense of ownership of women” and “the misogynistic killings of women by men.” With men recognized as the primary perpetrators.
And Gender-Based Violence refers specifically to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender, rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power, and harmful norms. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue. Physical violence, verbal violence, psychological violence, and sexual violence are the major types of GBV.
