Halloween is a time when most turn their attention to the paranormal, even if it is merely for fun and games. What some don’t realize, however, is that what ‘science’ may write off as superstitious or myth, is very much itself rooted in scientific observation; we light candles for warmth, light, and to ward off evil, and we anthropomorphize natural phenomena. On the other side, that which is ‘spiritual’ or ‘paranormal’ has always been the foundation for some of the most well-known scientists and their ideas or inventions, from television to the microscope. What we do with costumes, candy, and pumpkins, is both a scientific and spiritual practice meant to preserve our intimate spaces from the forces of darkness, while also providing a guiding light for easier communication with loved ones as the veil thins. Everything in-between is magic, ritual, and contractual agreements known as the ‘trick-or-treat’.
