Think about it... when you get into a relationship, be it a friendship, business, love etc. you find a lot out about YOURSELF through how the other person sees you.

Bear in mind though, not all relationships are healthy and people will see you through their own filters (sometimes deeply prejudiced filters.)

And given that the way you see yourself is influenced by those around you, you should, therefore, choose your relationships wisely.
