A lonely newcomer to a preppy neighborhood in Seattle, 28-year-old journalist Nick (played by Cary Elwes of The Princess Bride) finds it flattering that his landlord’s 14-year-old daughter Adrian (played by Alicia Silverstone in her first film role ever) has taken an interest in him. Rather than putting an end to the “crush” by having an honest and frank conversation with her, he decides to lead her on and the relationship spins into extraordinarily creepy territory. With a nauseating plot and main character who can only be described as deeply unsettling, the film culminates in a third act that has you rooting for the bad guy… or girl. George Malley (Travolta) is a Northern California everyman living on a farmhouse, working on cars, and crushing on Kyra Sedgwick, when one day –while stumbling back home from a bar– he receives a ray of light that grants him a supernatural ability to learn quickly. After discovering his abilities, he learns to cipher military codes, grow big ripe juicy red tomatoes, and gains the ability to detect earthquakes. Things get even weirder when his powers –which are bound to kill him– are discovered by scientists. With heavy Scientology undertones seemingly ripped from L Ron Hubbard’s teachings, the film was an integral part of John Travolta’s hard-earned 90s acting comeback which propelled him to a spot on the Hollywood A-list indefinitely. The lives of three Chicago tabloid employees are completely upended when they travel to rural Iowa to meet an angel living on Earth. Michael, played by total babe John Travolta, is a cigarette-smoking, sexy dancing, fun-seeking Archangel in this 1996 film directed by Nora Ephron. With an original movie score composed by ultra-Americana songwriter Randy Newman, the film exudes heartfelt earnestness and American Protestantism even in the more rebellious scenes. Michael (1996) is only one film in a trove of others of the same ilk –all portraying flawed angels falling to Earth to complete a mission– made in the mid-90s by big name directors. But it’s the only film that also interweaves a likely unnecessary romantic plot between actors William Hurt (a prize-winning journalist who lost it all) and Andie MacDowell (a dog trainer with a penchant for writing Dolly Parton-type songs), and even features a terrier as one of the main characters– luckily not the one from Fraiser. Fresh off filming The Sixth Sense, sex symbol and beloved actor Bruce Willis teamed up once again (perhaps unwillingly) to co-star alongside a kid in a supernatural hit. Lockdown in full effect and movies queued up, we are BACK! Pandemic be damned, we have Shiterion universe films to review!!! We take a look at at a MA-dern Shiterion classic, Ma (2019). Octavia Spencer kills it as the bowl-cut having, vet assistant scrubs wearing, dumpy local who gets high school kids drunk. Exploring the rarely examined trope of that person who should have left their hometown a long time ago was a rad move on behalf of director Tate Taylor. Your hosts also examine the long term friendship between former roommates and frequent collaboraters, Taylor and Spencer. Hand-to-groin contact, a bloody brain transplant, and a Denise Richards striptease– the gore cut of the 1994 b-movie Tammy and the T-Rex DVD was well worth our wait. The hosts take on the plot of the classic sci-fi film in which Paul Walker transforms into a tyrannosaurus rex by a strange scientist after being mauled by a tiger and left for dead by a murderous (high school) biker gang whose leader is in love with Tammy, played by Shiterion favorite Denise Richards. The hosts also discuss tokenism, Coppola’s The Outsiders, b-movie tropes of the 1980s, and theorize about whether Paul Walker is the grandson of Tammy director Stewart Raffill (who also directed the McDonalds film Mac and Me).    This last episode of Season 2 of The Shiterion Collection is dedicated to the late Paul Walker. In the 99th episode of The Shiterion Collection, the hosts discuss the Charlie Kaufman film Human Nature, released in 2001. The list of names involved in creating the film consists of many of the most talented people ever to exist in the film industry– including director Michel Gondry, Academy Award-winning actors Tim Robbins and Patricia Arquette, and Spike Jonze as a producer. Despite a zany plot, an A-list cast (with cameos from Hilary Duff, Peter Dinklage, and Rosie Perez) and a heady philosophical message, the film was unsuccessful at the box office and unpopular with critics. A teen psycho thriller for the instant message era, Swimfan was released in 2002 to lukewarm reviews all echoing the same sentiment– critics believed (and still believe) the film is a lesser Fatal Attraction set in the world of high school competitive swimming. Starring hunk of the year Jesse Bradford alongside blonde teen-goddess Erika Christensen, the film hits a lot of the notes we love to see in a high school erotic thriller– including a steamy pool sex scene and over-the-top violence. Director Todd Solondz made waves in 1995 with the debut of his independent film Welcome to the Dollhouse which is set in a world all too familiar world (the suburbs) but from a perspective never before explored– from the eyes of a dorky lonely tween girl named Dawn Weiner. Bullied for being ugly and  desperate for the attention of a hot high school musician, Dawn’s world is sad, funny, and feels true to life– making the film a realistic exploration of the sexuality and alienation that awaits everyone on the other side of puberty. A precursor to the mumble-cringe at-school indie genre that spurred titles like Napoleon Dynamite and Ghost World, the film also serves as indisputable inspiration for more modern works including Eighth Grade and PEN15.
