EP 495: Custom Rifle Talk with Mike Johnson of Hells Canyon Armory
There are a couple guest that constantly get asked for by name and sure enough Mike Johnson from Hells Canyon Armory is one of them. Long range and custom rifles have been growing like crazy in popularity and for good reason. People are learning that those opportunities at big mature animals are few and far between so you better capitalize. This week Mike jumps on to cover some very specific requests. We talk about his carbon barrels vs others on the market. We talk about the importance of a custom stalk. We talk actual bullet performance and bullet selection. Why he builds guns on bullets and not the other way around. We cover a ton of stuff and get really into the weeds on a lot of the topics. We also talk about Hells Canyon from an entrepreneurship perspective for those of my listeners who love all of the new business talk. Before we get started I want to tell you about my good buddy Mark Livesay and his e-scouting course.  Spending your hunting season going into an area where there are no elk is just wasting your hunting season. We all been there so excited to go on your big hunt only to find no sign of the animals. or worse your favorite spot has people everywhere. On top of that Mark’s e-scouting course will teach you to be a more successful hunter by showing you how to organize hunts, with hunt plans, backup plans, and really how to be for more prepared for that trip of the year or trip of your life. With 30 hours of modules this is by far and away the most valuable asset you can give yourself. The ability to read maps, terrains, and areas like a seasoned pro. EP 493: An Epic Montana Sheep Hunt with Matt Clyde
If you love a good hunting story you won’t want to miss this episode. I met Matt through a mutual friend, actually a couple mutual friends. Matt is just a hard working family man who loves to hunt. I would love to have Matt on again because I can tell he has spent some time in the mountains and I know he has been fortunate enough to take some truly great animals along the way. Last year Matt finally drew his Montana Sheep Tag. Like many of us he was bound and determined to give the tag the effort it deserved. Matt is one of those people who is definitely not scared to eat a tag in the chase to turn up the best animal in a unit. THIS was one of those hunts. Matt took it down to the wire, and along the way helped multiple people get their rams as well. What a incredible hunt hope you guys enjoy. Muddy Shutter has been absolutely crushing it and growing like crazy throughout not only the hunting industry but across multiple segments. Andy has a great story and has built this company on the back of hard work and constant grind. I love when people say they never sit out to be an entrepreneur, its just the only way they knew to keep surviving. EP 492: Hunt New Mexico with Matt Ellis
Welcome to the podcast! This week I am joined by rancher and outfitter Matt Ellis of  @borderland_Outfitters. In this episode Matt and I discuss some trends and opportunities for hunting in the great state of New Mexico. Matt has some amazing Antelope and Oryx hunts for anyone interested. We cover everything from Oryx, Barbary Sheep, Ibex, Elk and Antelope. New Mexico has a ton of opprotunity and also some truly giant elk. One thing I love about New Mexico is that a large number of units have the ability to kick out a monster bull unlike many states that have a couple top tier units and majority more with poor genetics. EP 490: Outdoors Entrepreneur Talk Brian Barney
Back on the “How to hunt 100 days a year” and we are talking to the guy that lives that life fully. Brian Barney is a self proclaimed blue collar guy who hunt at least as much as anyone I know. I wanted to have Barney in the podcast studio to really pick his brain on how to intentionally design your life as a contractor or in construction to be able to hunt prioritize hunting. I love this conversation and there are some real gems in here. If you guys are digging this kind of talk shoot me a DM or better yet leave a review It would be greatly appreciated. On the topic of Entrepreneurship back in October I did a podcast with a entrepreneur friend Codie Sanchez. She is a beast and that girl operates at a level I wish I played at. When she was on she had just launched her new course Unconventional Acquisitions. I finally got around to diving into it and holy crap is this thing a gold mine. I know a ton of you want to start a business or want to own a company. I highly recommend taking this course if you can afford it. It’s easy to get in this rut of think what we could start but taking this 30 day course has sparked so many other ideas for me and I can say I think this is way better than taking the risk of starting something from scratch. If you are entrepreneur minded and want to build a business that lets you go hunting this course is invaluable. She hooked you guys up with 25% off for the TRO code which is huge so be sure to use that code. click here to sign up. This podcast is brought to you by our Patreon feed. EP 487: Be All In! with Gastro Gnome Founder Shannon Waters
Here in Bozeman you get to meet so many cool people. Over the last year I have had the pleasure of getting to know Shannon Waters as she launched her new brand Gastro Gnome meals, a backpacking meal company making some of the best meals I’ve ever had. When I was first introduced to Shannon I probably had some preconceived notions, San Fransisco chef moves to Bozeman and starts a backpacking food company. It wasn’t long before Shannon threw those stereotypes right out the window. Shannon has this ability to be all in, something my over analyzing brain lacks seriously. Thats not to say makes rash decisions, or even impulse. Shannon has an ability to deeply analyze something and then act without doubt. Recently Shannon picked up hunting and actually had a great first year. Coming from the high end restaurant world of farm to table it was a natural progression into hunting your own food even though she has experienced kick back from within her circles. Show Notes:  Intro – About Shannon & Careers – 03:22 When to Jump & Considerations – 12:34 Field to Table & Shannon’s 1st Hunt – 22:01 About Gastro Gnome Meals – 34:32 Future Hunting Plans – 39:35 How to Help Gastro Gnome & Advice – 43:01 Backpacking Follies – 48:28 Giveaway…? – 52:09 This podcast is brought to your by ON x Maps. The number one mapping system for hunters. I use On X maps both in the field and at my laptop constantly. Whether I am scouting new locations or in the field On X is my go-to. I just got off a hunt that was filled with audibles, we changed plans constantly as we tried to find elk. I was with my good buddy and e-scouting legend Mark Livesay and over that week of hunting we continuously went back to the maps looking at options trying to dig up more elk. You have probably heard mention his e-scouting course Treeline Academy which I highly highly recommend. Marks system put us on literally hundreds of elk. Needless to say, we were in elk all week and were able to even find new elk because of On X and the tools available to hunters right on our phone. In fact I played with the new 3D feature right on my phone and that is way cool. ON X now has a 3D feature in the app that allows you to see your way points in a google earth type 3D view. Really cool feature. When it comes to e-scouting Marks course Treeline Academy is the gold standard and for me goHUNT, On X maps,  and Google earth are my go to tools. If you want to up your hunting game these tools are a must have in my opinion. goHUNT is a big supporter of the podcast and over the next 6 months I will be on goHUNT religiously, planning and scheming all of my next years hunts. Don’t waste money and more importantly years of struggling to figure out big game hunting. Go sign up for marks course. Then get yourself an On X membership and a goHUNT membership and take years off the learning curve. Use the TRO code for all three to save yourself some money.

EP 486: Kurt Racicot and Lyle Hebel Talk Big Mountain Hunting
Today I am joined by Kurt Raciot the founder of Stone Glacier and Lyle Hebel head of marketing. Kurt has been solo hunting big mountains and particularly sheep for most of his hunting carrier. I love the way Kurt approaches the mountains and hunting in general. Kurt is what you might call a minimalist. In fact Stone Glacier was truly founded on redefining ultralight hunting mainly because Kurt was a solo hunter who needed the ability to come out in one load with a sheep and all of his gear. in my opinion Kurt is just one of those people who looks at the world differently. He has the ability to look at a problem and ask how would I solve this in my own way. From hunting to gear design this has served him well over the years. In this podcast we talk about hunting big mountains, extended trips, relying on yourself and even dive into some design flows. Lyle just got back from an epic trip to Alaska where he was able to take a Dall Ram as well as great Mountain Goat on the same trip. Show Notes:  Intro – About Kurt – 04:19 Lyle’s AK Sheep Hunt – 10:19 Minimalism & Pushing It Solo – 23:43 Logistics & Execution of Mountain Hunts – 35:26 Stone Glacier: Design & Innovation – 40:50 Closing Advice & Gear Go-To’s – 55:21 This podcast brought to you by the awesome folks at Maven Built Optics. Maven is such a cool company and a great group of people. I also love that they are a small Wyoming company making big waves. Maven is a Direct to consumer optics company which means they don’t have huge mark ups. One of the most common questions you guys the listeners ask me is to compare mavens to something at an equal price point. I can’t say it enough Maven blows everything in a similar price point out of the water. Stop comparing products based on price. This is why I say Maven is the best bang for your buck by far and away, it’s not even close. Good glass is a must have. From their rifle scopes to binoculars, and spotters I highly recommend their optics. I haven’t gotten my hands on the new range finder but Maven recently just released a rangefinder that looks pretty sweet as well. Use the Code TRO-GIFT to get a free gift with purchase. Today’s podcast brought to you by the great folks over at On X Maps. The #1 GPS hunting app with onX Hunt and onX Offroad. They have you covered for all the activities. On X recently launched 3D maps which is an amazing feature that basically brings google earth into the app allowing you to not only see the terrain in 3D but also be able to easily see all of your way points as well. I love this new feature and saves quite a bit of time when escouting or when in the field. Use Code TRO to save 20% off your membership at www.onXmaps.com
