NYU student Max Wong talks about temporarily leaving college to serve two years in the Singaporean army and the journal he kept during his basic training, which he hopes to edit and publish as a book. Having spent most of his life in the United States and going to college here as well, Max spoke a lot about the culture shock he faced when being forced to go back to Singapore, adjusting to military life, and how writing helped him cope with it all (he even reads out some passages for us!). He explained some of the basic training he went through, how he ended up becoming a dental assistant in the army, and why his experience ended up being a mixture of the bizarre and the mundane in ways you wouldn't expect.
