When anthropologist Dr. Robert Kerr is visited by a strange old monk at his grandmother's wake in Mexico, he begins recording field notes about the mystery that unfolds around his grandfather's missing journals, which apparently contain a transcription of an ancient and somehow dangerous Mesoamerican codex. Along the way, he reveals the deep grief and selfishness that have alienated him from the few remaining members of his family.
