Best podcast Discovery in ‘23
I was alerted to this pod from another listen to. I gave it a try and immediately fell in love. The topics are pertinent, but not what you hear elsewhere. Discussions are thoughtful and from a different perspective.

Love the Nocturnist
I’m a social worker who works in the suicide prevention field, and also lives with disability and chronic illnesses. Dr. Silverman, Dr. Block and all your eloquent (and when warranted, humorous) guests do a wonderful job letting people into the intimate world of provider/pt interaction through the beautiful medium of storytelling. Thank you so much for such a lovely and lyrical podcast.

I’m a clinical social worker and the intersection of politics and healthcare is my jam! Thank you for the podcast.

Nocturnists Rocks!
Brave OB GYN doctors offer firsthand information how the dire state of reproductive healthcare is harming millions of women. They provide sound medical advice that is a counterpoint to the predominantly white men who lead the fight to put women in the dark ages. The Nocturnists is a step to help educate people why women must have reproductive healthcare once again.

Life-affirming
Vital and ironically life-affirming stories of people caught in the web of the, no, THE single most dangerous issue cleaving our country in two. As a senior, I am ashamed at the backsliding in our democracy and work every day to position the fault lines as best I can on social media. This podcast is a giant leap forward in understanding. Thank you.

ChatGPT interview. With Dr. Eric Topol
Using ChatGPT or any other AI application to help do a diagnosis is alarming. Which begs the question, why do we have medical schools? Why do we graduate new doctors every year? And why do doctors perform sub-par that ChatGPT helps them diagnose? These are questions which make patients question their doctors’ qualifications are an indicator of where medicine and medical practice is at these days. I do not want my doctor using AI to diagnose what ails me. I want my doctor to be fully present, professional, and competent to use his/her medical knowledge and experience. If this is the future of medical practice, it is a scary prospect. What next? AI surgery?

The Nocturnist presents Shame in Medicine
After reading a review in the New York Times on this series, I was intrigued to listen to it. Brene Brown has researched and written about Shane, and I was curious as to how this could be applied to the process of becoming a physician. I was immediately drawn in, by the personal stories and the research, which made these stories less anecdotal and more representative of what many people experience before, during, and after their medical training. It gave me more insight into the struggles of these young people as they strove to achieve their goals that they had set years before, prior to truly understanding what this path would demand.

Listener Discretion Is Advised
The Nocturnist podcast has been a lifeline for me during the pandemic and beyond. The series on shame in medicine…validated everything I’ve been feeling as a disciplined RN during the pandemic. I applaud your willingness to wade into discussions of bias, shame, and and dignity violations forthrightly and bravely. The interviewer is remarkably insightful, sharing personal stories which personalize whatever topic is being discussed. This podcast has helped me feel less isolated during the most challenging time in my career as an RN. It’s literally been a lifeline. Many thanks…

We are together
Frequently shows and podcasts on medicine are touching, wonderful and sometimes heart-breaking. The Nocturnist does this profoundly well and shows us the best parts of humanity. But for those of us in healthcare, what is particularly powerful about the Nocturnist is how it illuminates the challenges that we as healthcare providers struggle with. Hearing these stories feels good because it reminds me “I am not alone”.

Medical NPR?
This show reminds me of a medical NPR, including the left leaning political perspective. When it is not political, it is great.

One of my absolute favorite podcasts!
I’ve been listening to the podcast since season one, prior to my starting PA school. Now as a new grad about to begin my career, I plan to carry all of the invaluable lessons/stories I’ve learned from The Nocturnist with me into every patient encounter. I often go back and re-listen to my favorite episodes as they remind me of the big reasons why I pursued this lifelong journey of being a medical provider. I recommend this show to all of my fellow PAs whenever I get the chance!

The perfect creative outlet!
I am a full-time RN and worked bedside through Covid. I needed a creative outlet for myself that was completely unrelated to healthcare. I grew up in LA and loved acting. I currently live in TN and decided to pursue voiceacting. I now do it part time and it has been so therapeutic to tap into my creative side. I came across this podcast about a year ago and it is my favorite one to listen to by far. I was so excited to find a company with similar values. Medicine is both and art and a science! Thank you for sharing your many stories!

What a community web creator!
Really loving and respecting this podcast. Especially in a period of time when our healthcare workers are being put to the test and often abused by the greater population, politicians, and the media, these stories help create a web of compassion and community — we hear the overlap of our experiences, and can more deeply appreciate their investment in healthcare and healing. Thank you all for sharing your stories and offering such beautiful perspectives of your lives and desires!

Burnout mixtape
Every physician has a screenplay with their “war stories” in a tightly guarded drawer. It’s rare that we get the chance to eavesdrop on the table read, but we do with this podcast. A few years in, The Nocturnists is coming into its own as a reader’s theatre for docs who have no time to read but spend lots of time worried no one’s thinking what they’re thinking. Worth it to hear the voice cracks, yells, and tears without outside interference. Has an amateur’s rawness and eagerness to please but is not amateurish (storylines edited and curated thoughtfully). I rank 4 out of 5 rather than 5 to motivate listeners to earn that 5th star and make these stories a regional organizing tool for systems reform.

Amazing Podcast
Really LOVE this podcast. The stories are so intimate and insightful. Enjoy the narratives as well as the discussions afterwards. The podcast provides a space for reflection and community that is so needed in medicine. By doing so, it counters burnout and perhaps -by promoting physician self-awareness - it can improve ‘doctoring.’ Moreover, by humanizing doctors it offers insights to patients with the potential for improving doctor-patient relationships.

Dying to Tchaikovsky
An absolutely wonderful story telling of women in medicine so relevant to today! More over the attachment to music and the insight into the true human spirit which I too experienced 😊

This was my binge during the pandemic
Everyone has something they craved during quarantine and for me it was this podcast. Not only did I get the opportunity to contribute my stories but I also heard from people like me in clinic, industry, and the Bay Area tell their story in medicine. I look forward to the next season and for more projects from Ashley and Dr. Manning and the Nocturnists team.

Moving. Educational. Fierce
I have been moved by the stories of Black health care providers telling tales of courage and heartbreak. I’m so sad this series is over...can’t wait for season 2.

The Nocturnists is a Medical Podcast For Every Body
I’m a medical student, and this podcast is a guiding star to me. Give your wizened raisin of a heart the reviving gift of this listen! These stories are the true moments from lives of doctors, medical professionals, and the lives they intersect with— there’s a thrum of urgency about mortality and what happens when life is your work under every narrative here. The Black Voices in Healthcare series is the most wonderful, difficult, joyful, searing series yet! Highly recommended.

Powerful and emotional podcast
As a home health nurse I listen as I drive around to visit my patients, I cry and smile as this podcast draws me in to all the battles we fight daily in healthcare. I especially appreciate the podcasts with Black Voices in Healthcare.

Incredibly well done
I love this podcast and look forward to its new episodes weekly. They’ve done a fantastic job with the pandemic episodes - very real and raw. And as a medical student, listening to all the other seasons/episodes has been inspiring and really given me something to look forward to as well as help me become more mentally prepared (as much as possible, anyway). It’s been comforting to hear the human side of medicine from the people we consider the heroes, and realize that they too go through their fair share of self-doubt, second guessing, and challenges. Thank you for creating this podcast, I truly can’t recommend it enough!

Personal stories deeply touching and sincerely human that lift up the soul and spirit. Perfectly beautiful music. Blending of the satisfaction of good work and the pain of loss beyond words. Thank you for presenting. I’m honored to be right there with you.

These stories bring the pandemic home. So real and so strong. Thanks for bringing these stories to us and for ending these episodes with music.

Listening to epicenter
Just found this podcast while searching through browse. I’ve been taken to a place deep within. These hotlines into this podcast tell what only those who are on the front can adequately report. I pray for all your safety and for continued courage while you battle for our protection. These are not just stories. What I hear conveys souls tortured with fear while taking risks few would or could. There’s still the Hum of a busy self in their voices. I can thank them and much more—-wanting to hug them and tell them we will get through this. Every thing will be ok. That’s never enough but know we are filling our days with prayers for them and those they touch. They make great sacrifices. God Bless.

Listen and learn!
Please listen to this amazing podcast especially during this time of COVID 19. You think you know but you have no idea how much our healthcare workers are going through. Once you listen to the first episode of diaries your mind will be blowb. FFS the best way to support them is not clapping but staying home!

This is what we need
This podcast is exactly the type of thing we should be pouring energy into right now as healthcare providers. This is communal therapy. This type of journalism/art/story telling can help keep us human and sane. Thank you, The Nocturnists team.

If you are a health care provider
You will find something to appreciate. It’s therapeutic to hear others stories about things we are all dealing with when working with sick patients. Consider inviting nurses to tell stories too!

Helps me deeply reflect
Every episode provides me with new material to reflect on and relate to. I don’t always agree with the author’s perspectives or thoughts but that’s a great aspect of listening because the podcast has incited reflection and review. Overall, I think this is helping me become a better physician and person. This podcast has truly helped me cope during residency (my own “wellness” strategy!).

Sooooo good!
I am a Hospice Nurse, a daughter of aging parents, a sister, a friend of people with diverse health challenges. I LOVE this podcast. It brings humanity to medicine in a way that I find very reassuring. Listen to it. You will probably love it too!

Heartening for Patients
I have struggled with the power that doctors have over me and my loved ones in times of illness, and this shows opens up the minds and hearts of doctors and lets me recognize their struggles as well. I find myself wishing for a doctor as compassionate and thoughtful as the doctors who tell their stories here. Plus, it’s just great story telling.

Love love love this insightful podcast
As an incoming M1, I’ve been exploring different books and podcasts to grow more familiar with what it truly means to be a physician. This podcast has brought up so many excellent thinking points. It’s emotional, respectful, and very entertaining. I’m so excited for this next season!!!

Amazing, eye-opening, a window into the reality of patient care.
As an aspiring doctor, these stories allow me to experience the perspectives of physicians and patients as well as the emotions that both go through on a daily basis. The stories are so candid and the questionnaire following allows the listener to get to know the physician and understand the story better. The length of the podcast, the transitions within, and the content is great. This is my new favorite podcast.

Would recommend for anyone who has any regular interaction with the health care system or medical profession - to reflect on the deeper meaning in this process of healing we all seek.

Family
I love this show. It helps me put a lot of my thoughts into words. Additionally it helps me convey these things to my family. Often they asked about my day and cause I feel I can’t explain I say “good”. But like in the episode where her pediatric patient overdoses I was able to relay this fear to my father, the fear of not knowing what will happen when people leave the hospital. Thank you for what you do

Mirror
Full disclosure very new listener but S2 ep.9 was really like someone holding a mirror to me. Part of this is because I tend to sort of run from seeing myself in pathology and am shy about my interest but more than that the personal elements really resonated.
