Section 2Excerpts from the book Playing to Win: Becoming the Championby David Sirlin
On losing:
Losing is part of the game, if you never lose you are never truly tested and never forced to grow.
The old cliche states: Losing is an opportunity to learn.
Common Losing attitudes
- The “Code of Honor” aka - abiding by made up personal rules
- “You got lucky” - Blaming external factors and not learning from our mistakes
- “I suck” - taking a losing attitude into games (instead focus on your advantage - self doubt never wins games, positivity does)
- Game is too dumb, radom, boring
-
- Boring - definetly play another game
- Dumb - maybe there is another level of understanding it
- Random - tricky because the more random the worse it is for competitive play - the best way to answer that is “Can the same players conistantly win at it?” think of Poker as an example of a random game
- Most complaints are to help shrug off a loss instead of learning from it.
