This week, Drewby and Yergy head down to Texas to discuss the case of Laura Christine Boren, and her two children, Andre lee Boren and Leyha Marie Hughes. The young family were murdered in their Sherman home on March 27th, 2004, by Laura's ex-husband (and Andre's father), Andre Lee Thomas. Driven by intense religious delusions and hallucinations that had plagued him since childhood, Andre Sr. believed his family members were demons. Following instructions he claimed were from God, he cut open their chests and removed the hearts of the two children. He then walked home and stabbed himself in the chest three times in a failed attempt to "remove himself" from the crime scene. Andre Sr. had experienced lifelong mental illness, first making an attempt on his own life at age 10. Following his arrest, his psychosis led to shocking acts of self-mutilation. While held in a local jail cell, he gouged out his right eye. Three years after being sentenced to death, while confined at a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility, Andre Sr. gouged out his left eye and ate it. He later explained he did this to prevent the government from reading his thoughts. He is completely blind and remains heavily medicated in a psychiatric unit reserved for the state's most mentally ill prisoners.
