He loves to understand and study cells. Stem cells have properties that can heal the body. Plus, Dr. Gonzalez believes that stem cells can work against aging. In fact, stem cells are made naturally inside our body. [08:00] The Wild West of Cell Therapeutics & FDA Testing Any form of cell therapeutics is like the wild west. She wanted to know more about how lifestyle and nutrition play a role in chronic diseases. Plus, Megan was becoming frustrated with conventional medical school education. She helps people achieve optimal health and performance.  [06:15] You Made Necessary Lifestyle Changes But Something Is Still Wrong Megan will help people who already have changed their diets, and their sleep is on point. However, there are still health issues. In this case, Megan says something is going on in the gut. Intestinal permeability or dysbiosis could be causing health issues. A stool test and targeted supplementation can fix the gut problem. There isn’t a perfect stool test, unfortunately. [09:40] Mental Emotional Stress Impacts Not Just Our Digestive Health, But Also Our Overall Health There are different ways that stress can impact the gut. Both physical and emotional stress can have consequences. The elevation of stress hormones can cause direct inflammation and lead to further gut-derived inflammation. Stress hormones can potentially even lead to food intolerance if gut permeability is involved. Also, stress can directly impact digestion and nutrient absorption. Our bodies are not designed to digest food while we are under stress. Plus, stress can lead to making poor food choices. Stress can also increase motility and fluid reabsorption in the gut. Take deep breaths before eating – it will bring your body back into the parasympathetic state. [16:05] Eating Before Bed: It Can Affect Digestion, Sleep, And Your Circadian Rhythm  The body expects food to come during the day. Eating inherently increases our energy output and our body temperature. A drop in body temperature is one of the biggest signs or signals for our bodies to go to sleep. If you’re eating before bed, you’re not able to cool your body temperature down to increase melatonin. Sleep should be a time of rest and repair. If we are digesting while sleeping, it can cause issues. Plus, our gut microbes have their own circadian rhythms. [19:45] Megan Reveals Tips For Overcoming Acid Reflux   Avoid really large meals. Some people have specific food triggers that cause acid reflux. Don’t eat close to bedtime. If you’re doing everything right, look at what's going on at the level of the gut to see if there's small intestinal dysbiosis. [21:35] How Ketosis Can Impact Your Gut Health It makes sense from an evolutionary lens that our guts evolved to have this metabolic flexibility to adapt to different food resources available at a given time. There is some recent evidence in animals that butyrate may help enhance sleep. Butyrate also seems to have some anti-inflammatory effects both locally in the gut and then also outside of the gut. [25:00] The Importance of Rotating Foods For Gut Diversity When gut cells use butyrate as a fuel, it's actually converted to ketone bodies. Ketones may help improve gut function and also be used as an alternative fuel source for the gut. Increase gut diversity by rotating which foods you eat. Plus, going in and out of ketosis will also help with gut diversity.   [27:25] The Multiple Benefits That Fasting Has On Your Gut Health Longer-term fasting may improve gut barrier function. Improved gut barrier function is associated with reduced relative bacterial abundance. Intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating in your day-to-day life is a good thing. Plus, fasting can give your gut a rest. Strategic fasting is a helpful tool for your toolbox. [38:05] The Problems With Artificial Sweeteners & Which Ones You Should Avoid Monk fruit and stevia are some of the better artificial sweeteners. Whereas aspartame and sucralose are some of the worst. People who consume artificial sweeteners may have higher levels of insulin resistance. Long-term studies in humans looking at artificial sweetener intake that are controlled don't exist. There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered. Artificial sweeteners can potentially impact energy balance. [43:50] How The Carnivore Diet Can Help Heal Your Gut Nutrient-dense whole foods are great for your gut. What diet works for you today may not be helpful for you down the road. Antinutrients in plants can be problematic. They can inhibit nutrient absorption. Some antinutrients will increase intestinal permeability. [48:50] Should You Give Up Coffee For Your Gut Health? Polyphenols in coffee may have a positive effect on the gut microbial ecosystem. However, coffee can be inflammatory. People do not want to give up their coffee. Adding liquid saturated fats to coffee can be making your gut health worse. It can cause significant gut inflammation. If you’re having joint pain, brain fog, or an inability to focus, then coffee could be the issue. We need to appreciate that coffee can have both a positive and a negative effect on our gut health. Today’s episode is very close to my heart as I have a personal experience with diabetes. My father developed Type II Diabetes and I have watched him struggle with this disease. It was a very difficult time of my life. Ever since he passed away five years ago, I set out and study diabetes and why my fathers doctors’ advice did not work. This is a throwback episode from a KKP classic, episode 24 with Dr Jason Fung.  I came across the book The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Dr. Jason Fung where he explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good. The information that I now know would’ve saved my father’s life. Which is why I fully support Dr. Jason Fung’s, today’s guest, on his mission to spread as much information on diabetes and intermittent fasting to help as many people as possible. Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist. He’s a world-leading expert on intermittent fasting and low carb, especially for treating people with type 2 diabetes. He then decided that being a physician was more fitted to his style. After years in the university, he figured that he was also invested in doing research. As a physician, he can help people and do some research at the same time. In choosing a specialty, Dr. Fung felt that Nephrology suited his personality better. Nephrology is a complex specialty which is sort of a thinking-person speciality unlike cardiology which is more of an action specialty (i.e surgery) [4:13] Diabetes, Obesity and Intermittent Fasting The most common and important cause of kidney disease is Type II Diabetes which is closely related to weight gain and obesity. Treating kidney diseases with medications is the least effective way to treat people. You have to look at the root cause of the disease in order to be successful in treating it. Which is why, for Dr. Fung, the real question was “what causes weight gain?” Nutrition is not considered part of the medical specialty which explains why doctors depend on medications to treat certain illnesses. Second question: What are you gonna do about it? Obesity was not existent during the 1970s. Now, 70% of Americans are obese. Intermittent Fasting: People suffering with Type II Diabetes for 20+ years immediately felt better by intermittent fasting. Fasting is less fun that eating pizza and doughnuts. Fasting is tough work. It is important to give people undergoing intermittent fasting the support and education they need. [12:30] The Calorie Debacle Coca-Cola created a group called the Global Energy Balance Network to keep people focused on calories. They wanted people to think that 100 calories of broccoli is equivalent to 100 calories of Coca-Cola which is completely wrong. If you think that if you can eat cookies, drink coke and exercise then, you’ll be healthy, you are wrong. But, Coca-Cola wants you to think that this is right. Hormones control hunger, telling our body when to eat and when to stop. Different calorie sources elicit different hormonal responses. Diet and exercise are totally different things. Diet is what you eat. It affects the liver mostly. Exercise is mostly about skeletal muscles. Calorie is not a physiologic term. There’s no calorie-receptors in our body. We think that excessive intake of calories causes obesity. We think that this is a caloric imbalance. Too many ‘calories in’ compared to too few ‘calories out’ leads to weight gain. This Calorie Balance model of obesity has been drilled into us since childhood. Read more about the Calorie Debacle here. [18:40] Intermittent Fasting as a reasonable alternative to treat patients Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting are not as famous as low-carb diet. Jason Fung received a lot of backlash when he started to introduce intermittent fasting to his patients. Because of IF, patients were getting better. At the end of the day, you can’t ignore that. Other doctors started to notice the success of IF. Through his book, The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss, Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good. [25:55] Why the common treatments for type 2 diabetes seem to make things worse Type II Diabetes is a reversible disease. The standard treatment of Type II diabetes focused on getting the sugar down by medications. Doctors should’ve focused on the patient’s diet to help them lose weight because if you lose weight, your diabetes gets better. Jason Fung forever changed the way we think about obesity and he wanted to do the same for type 2 diabetes through his book The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally He explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. People cannot just make a decision to burn more fat calories, or to feel less hungry. These are physiological issues and must be addressed via physiology. [31:49] Dr. Fung’s Intensive Dietary Management (IDM) program now called The Fasting Method The IDM program helps people reach their health goals through intermittent fasting and simple-to-follow time-restricted eating strategies. It’s a structured digital lifestyle intervention developed by Megan Ramos and Dr. Jason Fung that provides you with all the education and support you need to succeed. At least several thousands of people have gone through the Intensive Dietary Management program and the number keeps adding up.   For 2019 years, people have already been talking about fasting and they don’t talk about it as a terrible thing. Fung clarifies that he didn’t invent intermittent fasting. He just started talking about it because it seems logical to him. [37:14] Guinness World Record on the Longest Recorded Fast In the 1971 edition of The Guinness Book of Records, Barbieri's 382-day fast was recognized as the longest recorded. The most important thing is that people feel well throughout their entire fasting. For 365 days a year, 3 meals a day, you are taking a total of 1000 meals per year. So, you need the water to be with you daily. Chemicals get into our system; they destroy us as human beings. Ghrelin secretions happen either in the stomach or the gastrointestinal tract. When the gut is damaged or not functioning, you don't produce ghrelin. The lack of ghrelin will cause sleep issues and brain issues. Hydrogen water can balance the brain within minutes. When hydrogen water hits the stomach, it will signal ghrelin to go to the brain. [52:45] Should You Give Hydrogen Water To Cats and Dogs?  Yes, give your pets hydrogen water. After drinking hydrogen water, animals no longer have kidney and liver issues. He then moved to Life Chiropractic College West in California, where he graduated with his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2000. After graduation, Dr. Clum moved to San Jose, Costa Rica where he was invited to work with the Costa Rican Olympic Committee and Athletes. Dr. Clum participated in the National, Central American and Caribbean and Central American Games as the team chiropractor and as the official chiropractor for two professional soccer teams. As a frequent guest on National Television and Radio, Dr. Clum was influential in bringing the gift of holistic health care to the people of Central America and worked with the government programs, instituting W.H.O. procedures and working directly with the indigenous populations of Costa Rica. First of all, the accuracy for calories is fundamentally off. There's automatically up to a 25% error rate for calories. Plus, our body will process calories differently depending on what they are. Sugars will be released into your body differently depending on your gut bacteria. [07:30] The Glycogen Concept Is Flawed – We Oversimplify It We never tap out our glycogen. You don't have to reduce glycogen by a significant amount if you're metabolically flexible. The glycogen in our liver is there for our body. Glycogen appears to be pretty steady no matter what you do. You don't have to deplete all your glycogen to go into fat burning. [17:30] People Who Burn More Calories Are Happier People who burn more calories are happier because of different hormonal states. Your body will interpret nutrients in your gut. Food is not fuel – it’s information. Your body doesn’t handle processed food very well, even protein powders. [24:10] Blood Markers You Can Use To Monitor Insulin Health You can do serum insulin, which is fasting insulin. You want that number as low as possible. This number should be around 2 or 3. When you eat, that number can blow up to seven times. If you start at 20, then you’ll go up to 140. If you keep doing that each day, then you have a problem. Most Americans eat in a fifteen-hour window – they are eating from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed. [26:05] Why Snacking Could Be Damaging Your Health Snacking causes a lot of issues. People are snacking between 19 and 23 times a day. If you are constantly digesting, then you aren’t recycling. When your body is resting, then it is in autophagy. So, your cells will start to work better. Autophagy allows new cells to come in and replace cells that have died. [31:40] Signs You Could Be Fasting Too Often Clum teaches progressive fasting rotations. Growth will start to kick in after a fast. You could lose 97% of your new cells if you don’t end a fast in the right way. It is rare that you lose lean body muscle from fasting. You have to have a body fat percentage of 5% or less to tap into muscle during a fast. [34:10] Does It Matter What Foods You Break A Fast With? What breaks the fast depends on why you're doing the fast. The food you eat will matter up to two weeks after you fast. Eat foods that are insulin friendly. Plus, exercise is a key component of repairing your cells. [50:45] Quitting Junk Food Causes Withdrawals Like Drug Addiction When an addict stops drinking, they will be lightheaded, irritable, feel terrible, shake, and sweat. When some people skip a meal, they feel the exact same way. Food fuels the addiction pathway. In fact, food is more addictive than drugs. Food hits dopamine and serotonin. Every time insulin gets shot out, so does serotonin. [55:30] Dr. Clum Does Not Encourage C-Peptide Level Testing If triglycerides are over 100, there's an insulin issue. Over 150 is a metabolic syndrome marker. Insulin resistance is inversely related to vitamin D. If your vitamin D is low, you have insulin resistance. Insulin will hold down vitamin D. [60:10] The Relationship Between Adrenals, Insulin, and Cortisol We beat up the adrenals a lot as the culprit for fatigue and adrenal fatigue. However, only a third of the cortisol is actually made in the adrenal. The brain makes a third of the cortisol because it is highly sensitive to inflammation. It makes cortisol to keep inflammation levels as low as possible. When you burn fat, it’s an inflammatory process. We will recycle about 1.3% of our cells a day. What matters is how efficient you are in the process. [73:45] An Overweight Diabetic Only Has To Lose One Gram For an overweight type two data to become a normal person, how much weight do they have to lose? People think it’s 10% of their body weight. However, the answer is one gram. The gram has to come out of the pancreas. If a 350 lb. person loses one gram from the pancreas, they will no longer be a diabetic. AND MUCH MORE! Unfortunately, Maria was not getting the answers that she was seeking from her doctor. The doctor wanted to put Maria on hormone therapy right away. For sleep issues, the doctor prescribed clonazepam. Overall, Maria’s doctor didn’t get to the causes of why she was experiencing certain symptoms. For Kristin, she had hormone issues her entire life. The solution from doctors was always a birth control pill. However, Kristin didn't know enough to understand that this was hormonal dysfunction. In Kristin’s thirties, she started to battle her weight, libido, and skin. Kristin’s doctor told her that nothing was wrong with her. Sadly, Kristin’s doctor would not check her hormones. Eventually, Kristin pursued a nutrition program and became board-certified. She started a journey on changing her food, hormones, and lifestyle. [09:25] How Making Lifestyle Changes Can Health Your Body Less is more when it comes to training. You may be overtraining. When you reduce your training, your weight may start to melt off. Sleep is a massive piece of your lifestyle. If you haven’t already, it’s time to get serious about your sleep patterns. Also, nourish your body and get monthly massages – it will make all the difference. [12:45] Making A Smooth Transition To Perimenopause When progesterone declines, it is never coming back. Menopause is a full 12 months without a period. The closer you get to menopause, there will be a lot of symptoms because your hormones are in flux. Some women, even with good adrenal health, are going to suffer. If you have low estrogen and low testosterone, you are fighting an uphill battle. [16:20] Practical Steps You Can Take Before Hitting Perimenopause First, dial in your nutrition. Women need to put down the smoothie and start eating bacon, eggs, and steak. Next, address adrenal health. It’s time to learn how to live with your stress. In your thirties and forties, taking care of YOU is really important. Salt baths, massages, and wine will be essential self-care pieces. If you don’t want to hit a brick wall in your late forties, then you need to deal with your self-care routine now. [23:35] Oatmeal: Why It May Not Be As Healthy As You Think Women don’t understand satiety. They mistake nutritional choices that fill them up as satiety. Someone has oatmeal at 9 am, then they are snacking again at 11 am. A nourishing meal should not be made out of kindling. A meal should be something that will satisfy you for four or five hours. Your first meal of the day should be protein-heavy. Most of the time, oatmeal is a dessert. Plus, women will feel full because they are bloated from eating oatmeal. [27:30] The Importance of Eating Animal Protein vs. Plant-Based Protein There is a massive difference between animal protein and plant protein. Primarily, the most significant difference is the carbohydrate load. Meat will be mostly fat and protein. Whereas plant-based protein will be high in carbs. Another difference is the amino acid quality. A lot of people eating a plant-based diet are also on anti-anxiety medications. Why are girls in their twenties and thirties on more medications than people in their fifties? [32:55] Strong Stomach Acid Is One of Your Best Anti-Aging Tools As we get older, we become more nutrient deficient. If you don’t have stomach acid, you aren’t going to get the iron from meat. A lot of Maria and Kristin’s clients are on hormone replacement therapy. However, if they don’t have strong stomach acid, they won’t benefit from their supplements. Stomach acid is going to sanitize anything that we eat. [39:55] Why The DUTCH Test Is The Best Diagnostic Tool In Functional Medicine Maria loves the DUTCH test because of estrogen metabolism. We want to see that the body is behaving with estrogen. Urine is the only way you will see estrogen metabolism. His lifestyle started to have a pretty massive toll on his body. Dorian’s weight had ballooned way over 200 pounds. Plus, Dorian was on antidepressants, and his job was going terribly. A friend told Dorian to get away from the carbs. After diving into science, a low-carb diet made sense. Over a period of three months, his weight dropped off, and he got off all of the antidepressants. In 2017, Dorian and his wife lost their house. They used the last of their money to start Keto-Mojo. Now, they are dedicated to providing free content with Keto-Mojo. [05:50] Why You Should Start Testing Your Ketones Measurement is the first step that leads to control. Once you can control something, you can improve upon it. There are different types of tests between blood, breath, and urine. Blood is the gold standard. Why are you choosing to go on a ketogenic diet? When you learn your why, it will become a lot easier to follow the lifestyle. First, you’ll want to know if you’re in ketosis or if you’re not in ketosis. That way, you can tell what types of foods are kicking you out of ketosis. “Let the data drive you.” -Dorian   [16:50] The Reason You Shouldn’t Measure Ketones With Urine Strips With urine strips, you don’t get clear digital granularity. Also, it can be really affected by hydration. If the strip is dark, people think they are in ketosis. However, it most likely means that the person is dehydrated. In addition, the ketone breath analyzers are pretty much useless. They were originally designed for methane detection. To get acetone in the breath, you have a tiny level of resistance. Plus, there is no method of control for both the urine strips and the breath analyzers. [24:15] The Optimal Ranges You Want To Aim For With Your Results Nutritional ketosis starts around 0.5 – 1.52. Over 1.52 into 3 and 4 will be a deeper ketosis zone. With blood glucose, 80 – 100 is what you’re going for in the morning. When trying out new food, a 30 point rise should be concerning. People need to become their own mentors by using data. Use data to guide your eating habits. That way, you can see whether or not certain foods are right for you. Sadly, Danielle was always spitting up - she had eczema, ear infections and needed to get her tonsils out. After removing her tonsils, Danielle developed tons of allergies and asthma. So, she started eating keto and fasting and reversed her PCOS, allergies, and asthma.  [09:55] Why Fasting Is Crucial To Making Insulin Hormones More Sensitive Our bodies become resistant to things really fast. When there are insulin levels in the blood, your body is becoming resistant to it. Intermittent fasting is a really great way to help to lower insulin levels. That way, you can become more sensitive to insulin. Fasting is the number one way to improve our insulin sensitivity. [13:10] How Industrial Seed Oils Are Contributing To Insulin Resistance Industrial seed oils are directly causing insulin resistance. Here are the oils to look out for: Vegetable Oils Soy Sunflower Corn Canola Safflower Cottonseed Grapeseed Rice Bran They will cause your body to have insulin resistance and also block your body's own fat burning. As the fats become part of us, then they interfere with the body's ability to burn its own body fat. A lot of people are stuck because they have this toxic body fat from seed oils. [14:50] Why You Should Steer Away From Processed Carbs The more you process a carbohydrate, the more likely it is to spike your blood sugar because you’re removing the fiber. It’s better to eat fruit than a smoothie. In a smoothie, you have really pulverized that fiber. Any sort of carbohydrate that is has been processed is really going to spike your sugar. Plus, carbs are addictive. [17:30] The Problem With Snacking & Why It Could Be Damaging Your Health There is no such thing as a healthy snack. However, if you are working on actively healing your reactive hypoglycemia, you may need to eat more frequently. Most of the time, snack foods are high in carbohydrates. Even if your snacks are not high in carbs, then it will affect your blood sugar. Danielle says it’s better to have a dessert than it is to have a snack. Your body is not meant to digest food all day. [21:55] Building Muscle Will Be Critical For Insulin Sensitivity   When you build muscle, it becomes like a sink for insulin and glucose. Muscles are some of the first tissues and cells in the body to become insulin resistant after the fat cells. Muscle building activities are really good for insulin sensitivity because it creates more space. The intensity of the workout is really helpful for insulin sensitivity as well. Working out to fatigue is going to be something to help to build muscles and burn up all the excess glucose. [23:30] How To Improve Insulin Sensitivity With Relaxation And Meditation Stress will undo whatever you do nutritionally. Stress will cause cortisol. Then, cortisol will make you insulin resistant. Chronic stress will elevate blood sugar over time. So, set boundaries and cut relationships with toxic people. However, if you can’t change your circumstances, then you need to find time to get your body out of stress. Danielle loves to do breathing exercises. [34:10] How Does Improving Sleep Help With Improving Your Glucose And Insulin Levels? If you’re tired, you will automatically gravitate to higher glucose and carb-filled foods. Also, if you have insulin resistance and glucose dysregulation, you're going to have a hard time sleeping. So, it is a very multi-dimensional approach to improving your sleep. Tape your mouth, make sure your room is dark and improve your bedtime routine. Lastly, get outside in the morning and get sunshine on your face. [37:00] About The Amazing Gallbladder And Its Relationship With Fat Digestion We need digestion to work beautifully to see benefits in our health. The liver is dripping bile into our gallbladder. When meals come, we have a good amount of bile. The bile will act as dish soap. Its job is to emulsify the fats, so we can actually absorb them. If we are not breaking fats down, we can't absorb them. Do you have chronic constipation? Do greasy meals kind of run right through you? Those are all signs that your gallbladder needs some love and support, and attention. Stay calm at meals and chew your food to have a really good digestive experience and digestive process.
