Nineteen thousand COVID patients came through Dr. Brian Tyson's urgent care clinic, and no federal health agency has ever asked him what worked. In this episode of The Jenny Beth Show, Jenny Beth Martin talks with the Southern California physician who kept his doors open when most doctors closed theirs, and who says the lessons of the pandemic are still sitting uncollected on the border.
Dr. Brian Tyson has practiced medicine for more than twenty years and runs All Valley Urgent Care, with three locations in Imperial County, California. A former emergency room physician and intensive care unit attending, he built outdoor test-and-treat centers when his county became the epicenter of Southern California's outbreak, saw three to four hundred patients a day, and developed a treatment protocol around monoclonal antibodies, budesonide, oxygen, anti-inflammatories, and repurposed drugs.
He walks through the first 1,800 patients and what he says happened to the ones treated before day seven of illness. He explains why "there is no treatment" struck him as either extremely naive or something worse, how off-label prescribing actually works, and how a two-and-a-half-hour conversation with the California Medical Board ended. He describes ten months of state data collection inside his own clinic, the two findings he says never made the publication, and the email he got the day after he asked why. He draws the parallel to the AIDS epidemic and the cheap treatment he says was set aside for a new drug.
