My change in focus for 2024 - from Reset to Responsibility
I'm just coming out of my little Christmas / New Year hibernation. I've been up in Scotland for a couple of weeks at my folks house with Victoria and our little girl, hanging out with family and eating all the food and watching all the Christmas films and doing all that stuff. So I just want to start off by wishing you a massive Happy New Year, whatever you've been up to, whatever holidays you celebrate. I hope you had a good little break whilst everyone else shut down and you're feeling refreshed and ready to go for the year ahead.Now this is a New Year focused episode. I'm not talking about goal setting today though. I went a little bit off piste and wanted to focus on something that came into my life, an exercise that I first  came across about 12 months ago that had a big impact on my 2023 and something that I will continue to do going forward.And I thought I'd share that process with you and share a bit about the impact that it's had on me and hopefully give you some inspiration about how it maybe can impact you and what your intention could be for 2024, not necessarily to replace goals or your goal setting process, but to sit alongside it. Property investing in the French alps? Yes please! With Gina Ewart
You may have heard that over the past couple of summers, we've been spending a little bit of time in the mountains, specifically in a sleepy little ski resort called Morzine. And after decades of enjoying ski holidays in the winter, we thought, let's go check out what all the fuss is about for mountain summer holidays. We had an absolute blast. And in the process, we were lucky enough to meet a family who run a business called Reach 4 the Alps in Morzine. They've been doing it since 2000, so over 20 years now.And in today's episode, I get the chance to catch up with Gina, one half of the business and family partnership that has been running that company for those 20-plus years. And we get to talk about a whole bunch of different things. I mean, at its core, it's a service accommodation business, hence the relevance. But I know a lot of us are investing in property to do other things with our lives, right? Property is not the end, it is the means to that end. But maybe we could combine the two.Maybe we could enjoy a different lifestyle, a different way of life, a different geographic location, or just something that we are more passionate about by investing in property in a way that allows us to have fun at the same time, which is exactly what Gina and Marcus have been doing - investing in a place that they love so that they can ski several times a week, they can enjoy that mountain life throughout the summer as well, raise their kids in a great location with all of that outdoor lifestyle. That specifically may or may not appeal to you. It doesn't matter, but I think what is important is that we can create a life, we can create a business that is built around what we want to achieve, what is important to us, and what makes us happy.So hopefully you get some inspiration, whether it's about the service to accommodation side of the business, which includes some owned ski chalets as well as some rent-to-rent stuff, or just to get some creative juices flowing in your own mind about what a property business that works for you could look like. Medical Dr Tom Rourke is building a portfolio of large HMOs in a challenging Article 4 area
Today's guest, Tom Rourke, is a member of the IPI Mastermind. I have had the pleasure of getting to know him over the past six months. I cannot take any credit for his past success, and this isn't to brag about how we've been able to turn around his business overnight. It's really just to say I'm thrilled to get to surround myself with people like Tom who have achieved what he has achieved in a relatively short space of time, and I'm hoping that this interview today will give you some idea, some inspiration of what is possible in four or five years of dedicated investing, but alongside a pretty busy and hectic career as well. And I love lots of things about what he's done.
