In this episode of "The Good World," I, Seth, dive deep into my personal struggles with the fear of failure and the fear of success. I open the episode by sharing my background, including my previous career in data analytics and political polling, which culminated in a significant moment when my work was featured in Time Magazine during the Obama campaign in 2012. This experience, while exhilarating, also set the stage for my ongoing internal conflict about success and the expectations that come with it.
As I reflect on my journey, I discuss how I transitioned from a successful career to pursuing a more creative path, including starting this podcast. I candidly admit that many people in my life may not fully understand my motivations or the direction I’m taking. I share my experiences of moving to California, attending Interfaith Seminary, and how these changes disrupted my creative rhythm, leading me to put my podcasting ambitions on hold.
Throughout the episode, I explore the concept of success and how societal pressures can distort our self-perception. I recount a pivotal moment from my high school years when a classmate labeled me a "waste of potential" after I achieved a high SAT score. This comment, while not meant to be hurtful, encapsulated the pressure I felt to constantly achieve and the fear of not living up to expectations.
I also delve into my struggles with ADHD and how it complicates my ability to juggle multiple projects. I discuss the paradox of wanting to create and share my thoughts while simultaneously fearing the judgment that comes with success. I reflect on my past experiences in theater and improv, where I could hide behind characters, contrasting that with the vulnerability of sharing my true self on this platform.
As I navigate these fears, I emphasize the importance of recognizing that both success and failure are narratives we create. I share insights from a recent concert I attended, where the lyrics of a song by The Flaming Lips resonated deeply with me, reminding me of the impermanence of life and the necessity of embracing both positive and negative emotions.
In closing, I acknowledge that avoiding negative feelings is not a sustainable way to live. I encourage listeners to confront their emotions, process them, and not let the fear of judgment prevent them from expressing themselves. This episode serves as a reminder that while the world may be chaotic, we can still strive to create a space for authenticity and connection. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I hope to see you next time as we continue to build a world that is good.
