With a mustang in the driveway, guitar in the trunk and a full tank of gas, Roderick August hit the I-40 East in 2018 out of California. He toured over 40 states that year, all alone, all acoustic. The responses received from this big beautiful country were inspiring enough to begin work on his debut album. Touring by yourself pushes an artist to make sense of the never ending Texas skyline, or understand what the Smokey Mountain hummingbirds are really humming. With a year of constant gigging behind him and a batch of new songs, Roderick August released his debut album FOREVER THE FAR THE CLOSER THE NEAR (2020). The album is a firm handshake to the unsuspecting public with no tricks, no mirrors, just a highly motivated singer songwriter with a sole purpose to properly tell his story. This debut wouldn’t exist without the roaring flames of California’s wildfires, nor would it sing without the howling tornadoes of middle Tennessee and the album cover itself was yet another enchanted morning in the deserts of New Mexico. This is what American life might sound like, for Roderick at least.
