The International Day of Light is celebrated on May 16 every year to create awareness about the role of light in science, culture and art, education, and in fields like medicine, communications, energy and etc. May 16 is marked in the remembrance of first successful operation of laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman.
