In today’s episode, I want to discuss an interesting article I stumbled upon in the Global Spine Journal. It focuses on the significant cost drivers for hospitals around spine surgeries. The article highlights several areas where hospitals could save money, including the overuse of MRIs, spinal orthoses, and intraoperative neuromonitoring. While it shows how unnecessary procedures drive up costs, I couldn’t help but feel that some of the claims might be oversimplified, particularly around the "overuse of advanced imaging." The more I dug in, the more I realized that each of these claims deserves its own discussion—whether it’s MRIs being overused for back pain, or the high cost of robotic surgery and biologics in spinal fusions. This is just a quick snapshot of the article, but stay tuned as I (hope to) explore these claims in more depth in upcoming episodes!
