Just six days before Passover, Jesus comes to Bethany and there a dinner is given for him; Mary, Martha, and Lazarus are present. Mary anoints the feet of Jesus with costly nard. Judas Iscariot complains that such was a waste since the expensive oil could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor. Though not stated in John, but in Matthew and Mark’s accounts, Jesus says that what Mary did would be proclaimed to the whole world. Attendant to the anointing, a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was nearby, this Jesus who had raised Lazarus from the dead, whereupon His opponents, the Jewish leadership, determined that Lazarus must be killed.
