At age 11, Sura Yekka set three goals for herself: play at sport at a Division I university in the U.S, make a Canadian national team, and become a professional athlete. Little did she know that she would accomplish all of those goals- but not without challenges and even self doubt. As a kid, soccer was always Sura's main sport. However, she also showed a lot of potential in track and field, setting an age group record for Ontario in the 400. Sura's mom was a track star at the University of Alabama and went on to compete in the Olympics for Uganda. Having to choose between track and soccer, Sura let fate decide. When she ended up making the Ontario provincial soccer team at age 13, her decision was made. From that point on, she lived and breathed soccer.
In this episode, Sura takes us through her soccer journey- including playing in U17 and U20 World Cups, making the senior Canadian national team at age 16 and not feeling ready to play with the best players in the world, and the ups and downs of college soccer. Despite bumps in the roads and coaches not giving her a chance, Sura somehow found her way back to the game time and time again. Sura discusses how every challenge led to lessons learned, including the importance of having balance, and her belief that everything happens for a reason. Despite almost quitting the game in 2020, she found her way to the professional game and currently plays for Le Havre in France. In November, she was asked back to the Canadian national team. Her story is one of resilience, grace, and inspiring determination.
