It's an oft repeated belief that empaths are sponges who soak up energies/emotions around them and are incapable of choosing otherwise. Sponge, the beings in animal experience, would beg to differ. Being deeply aware of energy also means you have an accountability to choose how to respond.  Be-ing a sponge is a choice, not a mandate.
