America is preparing to celebrate 250 years of independence. Fireworks, flags, speeches, and patriotic stories will fill the country. But for Indigenous people, the Fourth of July carries a different memory.
1776 was not freedom for Native nations.
In this episode of The 7th Generation Podcast and Dr. B Teaches, Dr. B flips the America 250 celebration and tells a deeper story: more than 500 years of Indigenous resistance across this hemisphere. Before the United States existed, Native people were already resisting European invasion, enslavement, religious violence, land theft, forced labor, and colonial domination.
This episode begins in 1492 with Taíno resistance in the Caribbean, then moves through Mexica resistance in Tenochtitlan, Maya resistance in Mexico, the Pueblo Revolt, Powhatan resistance, the Pequot War, Metacom’s War, Pontiac’s War, Tecumseh’s Confederacy, the Seminole Wars, the Trail of Tears, California Native resistance during the Gold Rush, the Caste War of Yucatán, Red Cloud’s War, the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Nez Perce War, Apache resistance, Wounded Knee, Alcatraz, the Trail of Broken Treaties, the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee, the Longest Walk, Standing Rock, and today’s movements for Land Back, treaty rights, water protection, sacred sites, language revitalization, and Indigenous sovereignty.
The United States tells the Fourth of July as a story of freedom. But freedom for who?
For Native people, American independence meant westward expansion. It meant broken treaties. It meant military conquest. It meant forced removal. It meant boarding schools. It meant the theft of land, water, children, and memory. But Native people were never passive. Indigenous nations fought, adapted, survived, rebuilt, and continue to resist.
America may be 250 years old, but Indigenous nations are thousands of years old.
This land was never empty.
Native people were never defeated.
Indigenous resistance never ended.
