Pat Foley has been the sound track of the Chicago Blackhawks since 1980 save for two years when he was banished by then owner Bill Wirtz. But when his son Rocky took over two years later, he brought back the iconic and extremely popular voice who will retire at seasons’ end.
Foley already has been enshrined in the hockey hall of fame. His scintillating descriptions combined with a robust sense of humor has endeared him to Chicago sports fans. He was behind the mike calling such Blackhawks stars as Denis Savard, Chris Chelios, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, the latter two who were part of three Stanley Cup championships. But it was his high pitched almost shrill description of a certain Blackhawks goaltender that elevated his populatiry. “ BANNERMAN,” Foley bellowed as the goalie made a big save. It’s a call that cemented him as a fan favorite.
But the time has come to bid farewell and in this engrossing two part episode, Foley explains why it’s time to retire, the partners he’s worked with including his current sidekick Eddie Olczyk and his absolutely side splitting story about an ex Blackhawks defenseman. You won’t want to mis this!
