This lecture was supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Canberra. Martin Bayer, an in international guest speaker and historian from Germany explored commemoration in this one off public lecture. In Germany, a common narrative of the First World War could never be established. In recent years, the federal government remained hesitant about embracing the centenary, but focussed projects brought this aspect of history back to public attention.
