Ants have colonised almost every landmass onĀ Earth. The only places lackingĀ indigenousĀ ants areĀ AntarcticaĀ and a few remote or inhospitable islands. Ants thrive in most ecosystems and may form 15ā25% of theĀ terrestrial animalĀ biomass. Their success in so many environments has been attributed to their social organisation and their ability to modify habitats, tap resources, and defend themselves. Their longĀ co-evolutionĀ with other species has led toĀ mimetic,Ā commensal,Ā parasitic, andĀ mutualisticĀ relationships.
