Why is 'faith' the means by which God saves His people? Why not some other means? Why not a pilgrimage, or a set of daily prayers, or a list of moral behaviours? Why faith? The Bible says that the wisdom of God is displayed in the Gospel, and yet this wisdom is opposed to the wisdom of the world.
