The Florida Board of Education approved a new set of standards for how Black history should be taught in the state’s public schools, sparking criticism from education and civil rights advocates. Among the many criticisms, most notably by Vice President Kamala Harris, was the assertion that slaves learned skills that “could be applied for their personal benefit.”
