Starting in the 1950s, a man named Jim Jones founded the People's Temple. While the people who joined this church often had good intentions, Jim Jones did not - and he was creating what would later be recognized as a cult. He moved the People's Temple from Indiana to California, and then he fled with his church to South America. There, in 1978, Jim Jones organized a "revolutionary suicide" that was really mass murder - and over 900 people lost their lives.
