A cover letter is a letter of intent to express your desire to be employed for a specific position.  It gets the attention of the employer, sets the tone for the additional documents that will be attached with the document, i.e. the resume, letters of recommendation, transcripts, certifications, and other items of this nature.  And Its a kind of like a love letter.
