Today we discuss Hou Hsiao-hsien’s “A City of Sadness”, possibly his most defining film. Although some of its historical context was difficult to fully grasp for us, we still found it a beautiful film, particularly in how the patient and distant images work towards building the film’s strong but restrained emotions.
