We take a look at the Eisenstein’s “Ivan the Terrible”, part 1 and 2. As is expected from Sergei, the film features an intense editing as well as an intentional theatricality, seen in the way he frames the characters but also in their performances. Although it takes some adjusting to the film’s style, both parts are a fascinating look into Eisenstein’s creativity even when operating within the bounds of a more narratively straightforward film.
