The story of Cain and Able is old but for a good reason. It is history to learn from. The moral agents God created to rule with Him have chosen to let sin into their lives. Maybe we haven't murdered, but we have chosen to do the wrong things. Sin is like a parasite; it will never leave once you invite it in unless Jesus cleanses you from all sin.
