On today’s episode, we are talking about the third un-truth from Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt’s book The Coddling of the American Mind. If you’re sentient in the year 2020, you’ve probably noticed this one.
The un-truth is that the world can be separated into two groups of people: the good and the bad. The good group consists of all the people who think and believe what I do, while the bad group are all the crazies that don’t.
This creates the idea of Us vs Them, which has some pretty terrible consequences when lived out. We find ourselves attributing the worst of motives to those who don’t hold our views or opinions, which in turn creates greater separation between people who could otherwise have an enlightening conversation and friendship. That’s terrible.
Well, our goal here is to help people be less terrible, so let’s dive into this topic and figure out how to do this together.
