We all have a mission. Our places of work have a mission. And most have Mission Statements, Organizational Values, or similar documentation. They are the standards that are supposed to guide the organization and its employees towards the mission in their everyday activities.
But how often are these statements or values actually referred to? How much do they really make a difference? Even worse, how often are they ignored or set aside because of a “special circumstance?”
I’d argue that more often than not, these standards mean nothing in reality. They are thrown up on a wall, talked about to inspire or make us feel good about ourselves, but in actual practice, abandoned the moment they become inconvenient or hard to hold. And that’s what today’s conversation is all about:
“Standards are easy to talk about but difficult to hold.”
