Whitney Trotter RN RD is here to talk about the ways we must start revolutionizing eating disorder care, to do no harm when caring for marginalized identities. Whitney is both a registered nurse and registered dietitian, an anti-diet practitioner, and an advocate for social justice reform in eating disorder treatment. We talk about how her work has evolved, how traditional and standard ED treatment norms fall short, how we can foster confidence with flexible eating, and how cultural cuisine shouldn’t be a special ‘challenge’ meal. We also get real about how we can avoid putting “anti-diet” care in a close-minded box. Follow and support Whitney’s work via Instagram @Bluff_CityHealth. Abby Chan MS RD is a fellow sports nutrition enthusiast, bringing anti-diet work to both dietetics and the fitness industry. In fact, she built her own body-inclusive fitness space with her spouse, focused on reducing body and weight stigma while helping folks move in ways they want to. Abby holds nothing back when she talks about how the fitness industry "cheapens their trade" by perpetuating weight stigma and focusing so intently on healthism. Come for this body-inclusive real talk, and stay for an insight into Abby's experiences as a dietitian, fitness pro, and Chinese-American. The first real talk in real time episode of 2020! Welcome to the chaos. CW: Mention of eating disorders and levels of treatment. In this short n' sweet chat, I'm elaborating on Eating Disorder (ED) treatment, and how someone might need another round. Many folks I've worked with and met over the years have had an experience with treatment in the past, but life happens (i.e. trauma, weight stigma, pandemics, grief, big changes, etc.) and they might be a candidate for structured treatment again, before continuing with outpatient care. If you're working with clients, it's important to know this, to be familiar with the ED treatment acronym alphabet, and to remember how much support folks might need as they step into outpatient care. We're back! I'm back. The mic has been dusted off. It feels good to be talking to you again. And, since we last talked, things have changed. So, let's start there. This episode dives into three major changes you can expect from RD Real Talk in the coming weeks and months, and we'll see how it goes. 1) More real talk about current events! 2) Co-hosts that help me address listener questions. Have a question to submit? Email me! (See below.) 3) Payment for these co-hosts, along an equity model to adequately compensate BIPOC folks and marginalized identities. We're starting with help from you, and partnerships I'm exploring, to make the show a more sustainable business. Amee Severson RD helps us bring this series to a close as we finally talk about the very nuanced principle, gentle nutrition. This principle is how it all comes together, though it’s not seen as often on Instagram and the like. We dive into what “gentle nutrition” means, who it’s accessible for (or not accessible for), and how nutrition isn’t always the most important thing ever. Thanks for listening!
