In the 1980s Yorkshire towns were all male prowess, which usually ment attempting a liquid suicide of drink each night to show your tribe what a man you  were. It ended with some terrible casualties. The Yorkshire accent is extremely harsh and to most people I would think almost  uncomprehensible.
