Kelly Daniels, Executive Director with Blue River Forest Nature Sanctuary in Overland Park, discusses a “Kansas Memorial Horse Ride for the Potawatomi Trail of Death”, which they are planning for September 20-23. Ms. Daniels is also a photographer and owner of The Kelly Gallery at 17315 Antioch Rd, Overland Park, Kansas, next to the Blue River Forest Nature Sanctuary. Drive south on Antioch until the road ends, and you will be there.
A Potawatomi woman dying of breast cancer asked her husband to lead the first horse ride on the Potawatomi Trail of Death. That widower, Tom Zeigler -Wanbli Luza (Swift Eagle), will be doing just that with the help of Kelly Daniels and others. Zeigler is an avid horse trainer and Lakota cultural teacher.
The horse ride starts at Blue River Forest Nature Sanctuary in Overland Park Kansas at 9 AM on the 20th. Horses arrive to the Potawatomi trail of death marker at Heritage Park at noon for a ceremony and lunch. The ride travels through Overland Park, Hillsdale, Paola, Osowatami and Parker and ends at a ceremony at Noon on Saturday the 23rd at the Sugar Creek Mission where the trail ends at the St. Philippine Duchesne Memorial Park.
