It’s all been leading to this: The Key to Time season promised a big payoff, one that would assemble the most powerful artifact in the universe and put the Doctor in the middle of a cosmic conflict between the Guardians (well before they had silly birds on their heads). But with the stakes so high, why are we spending so much time pondering princesses and marshals on boring, radiation-soaked planets with nothing but corridors? It all has to be a metaphor for something, but don’t ask us: we’re having a hard time concentrating with two Romanas on screen, not to mention a double agent K-9.
