Philosophers In Space
Philosophers In Space
Aaron Rabi and Thomas Smith
We've trapped two philosophers in deep space for your amusement. To stave off space madness, they're beaming back podcasts where they overanalyze science fiction to mine it for delicious philosophical concepts. Tune in to our fun little experiment, with samplings from Black Mirror, Star Trek, Rick and Morty, and many more! Live long and philosopher.

0G125: Parable of the Talents and Process Philosophy/Theology, Part 2
God, and I cannot stress this enough, is Change. Shape, please please please shape God. In honor of Butler's original artistic vision, this material will be forever attached to the 2020 presidential election. We'll try to talk about process philosophy and process theology as well, but I hope we all get what this about. Good luck out there. Stay safe and sane. 0G124: Parable of the Talents and Critical Race Theory, Part 1
Election season is upon us! Will we end up with the needlessly rapey "Make America Great Again" demagogue? How many people of color will experience some form of genocide? Will the Pox ever end? While we wait to see, we start our coverage with the background from Parable of the Sower, the first book in the series that is recapped at the start of Parable of the Talents. We provide a crash course on Critical Race Theory, which we'll unpack further over the next few episodes alongside the other philosophy. Keep breathing, we'll get through this. 0G122: Robocop and AI Police
Finally, a break from all the depressing social commentary for a lighthearted 80's romp through scenic Detroit. This movie has so much 80's it's legally the equivalent of doing coke off a sex worker. We discuss the less heavily covered topic of replacing police offices with robots, and do our best to try to pretend like this isn't a solved question. 0G121: Lovecraft Country and Othering
Are you seriously reading the show notes?! Don't you know that reading is the worst thing you can do in a Lovecraft story? That and being a person of color. And reading while a person of color, that is right out. We're starting our first of many forays into Lovecraft Country, both the book and the show (and eventually the larger mythos). We cover the general structure of both book and show, with some non-spoilery references up through episode seven. We discuss the role of othering in Lovecraft's racism and his cosmic horror, and how Lovecraft Country transforms the other by centering a variety of marginalized groups. There's really is no better way to honor such an important racist than by using his work to tell the stories of the oppressed.  Whiteness and Othering in Lovecraft: https://scholarworks.wm.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2348&context=honorstheses Editing by Luisa Lyons, check out her amazing podcast: http://www.filmedlivemusicals.com/ Support us at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/0G  Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/0gPhilosophy Join our Facebook discussion group (make sure to answer the questions to join): https://www.facebook.com/groups/985828008244018/  Email us at: philosophersinspace@gmail.com If you have time, please write us a review on iTunes. 0G119: Children of Time and Neuromorphic AI, Part 2
Ugh, filthy hoot-mans. Truly the worst part of any sci-fi. We must struggle through though as we can't really explain the brilliant climax without explaining the absurd journey of the misguided bipeds. We make it tolerable by focusing on the dangers of uploading/copying human minds in hardware and software.    Neuromorphic AI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuromorphic_engineering    Support us at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/0G    Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/0gPhilosophy   Join our Facebook discussion group (make sure to answer the questions to join): https://www.facebook.com/groups/985828008244018/    Email us at: philosophersinspace@gmail.com   If you have time, please write us a review on iTunes.
